صَفراءَ صِيغَت مِن وَجنَتَي عَبدِه
He gestured toward his cheek with a lily,
He pointed to his cheek with a yellow rose
Yellow, fashioned from his slave's two cheeks.
Molded from the cheeks of his beloved

سَوسَنُهُ نابِتٌ إِزا وَردِه
Never before him had my eye seen a bough
Never before have my eyes seen a branch
Whose lily grows beside its rose.
His rose grows next to his rose
أَعمَلتُI put to work زَجريmy augury فَقُلتُso I said رُبَّتَماperhaps
أَعمَلتُ زَجري فَقُلتُ رُبَّتَما
قَرَّبَhe brought close خَدَّthe cheek of المَشوقِthe yearning lover مِنto خَدِّهhis cheek
قَرَّبَ خَدَّ المَشوقِ مِن خَدِّه
I brought my augury to bear and said: perhaps
I tried to scold him, “Perhaps
He has brought the yearning lover's cheek close to his own.
The lover brought his cheek too close to his.”
