خَلِيلِيmy dear friend وَلاand not أَدعوI call سِوَاكَanyone other than you بِمِثلِهَاby its like
خَلِيلِي وَلا أَدعو سِوَاكَ بِمِثلِهَا
سِوَىexcept for مَلَقٍflattery تهذِيbabble بِهِwith it أَلسُنُtongues الشِّعرِof poetry
سِوَى مَلَقٍ تهذِي بِهِ أَلسُنُ الشِّعرِ
My dear friend—and I call no one else by such a name,
My friend, I call none but you with such verse,
except in flattery babbled by the tongues of poetry.
Except for empty words with which tongues of poetry rave,
أَخُصُّكَI single you out لاnot أَنِّيthat I ازدَهَيتُI have grown haughty عَلَىover الوَرَىmankind
أَخُصُّكَ لا أَنِّي ازدَهَيتُ عَلَى الوَرَى
وَلَكِنand yet تَخَطَّيتُI have passed beyond التُّرَابَthe dust إِلَىto التِّبرِraw gold
وَلَكِن تَخَطَّيتُ التُّرَابَ إِلَى التِّبرِ
I single you out, not because I have grown haughty toward mankind,
I single you out - not that I boast over mankind,
but because I have passed beyond dust to gold.
But I transcended the dust to choose the gold.
