Why did you scowl when we met,

when you used to greet me smiling?

And when I asked you what had happened,

you remained, brow knitted and grim.

You answer me with a strange coldness,

and slowly, as a dreamer speaks,

as though your carefully chosen words were

    a debt you discharged unwillingly.

You may raise a soft, plump hand

    to caress your raven-black locks,

and turn your gaze through the glass

toward the face of the clouded horizon,

as if you feared to meet

my eyes with your faraway gaze.

Where is the embrace I had grown used to,

    and your sweet, tender whisper?

And where is the blush upon your cheeks

when you lie asleep upon my arm?

And where is the springtime of our love—the one

    whose lasting bloom enchanted me?

    Has time trampled its blossoms

    and quenched its raging longings?

Is nothing left of a dream I lived

    but sorrow and bleak estrangement?

Answer me; do not think I fear

    confronting the decisive moment.

For your silence bears within its folds

a warning of a coming tempest.

If you are afraid of my anger,

then, my lady, you are mistaken.

You are not the first heart to betray,

    nor the first cruel woman.

    فإن شئت فلتكن الخاتمه !

    Every dream must have an awakening;

so, if you wish, let this be the end.
