فتى الهيجاء لا تعتب علينا

فتى الهيجاء لا تعتب علينا

وأحسِن عذرَنا تحسنْ صنيعا

وأحسِن عذرَنا تحسنْ صنيعا

Young warrior, do not reproach us.

O youth of vigor, do not reproach us

And kindly accept our excuse; you will do a good deed.

And accept our excuse, you will do well

تمرستم بها أيام كنا

تمرستم بها أيام كنا

نمارسُ في سلاسلنا الخضوعا

نمارسُ في سلاسلنا الخضوعا

You grew seasoned in battle in the days when we

You have accustomed us in the days when we were

practiced submission in our chains.

Practicing submission in our chains

فأوقدتم لها جثثًا وهامًا

فأوقدتم لها جثثًا وهامًا

وأوقدنا المباخر والشموعا

وأوقدنا المباخر والشموعا

So you set corpses and heads ablaze for it,

So you have ignited for it corpses and passions

and we lit censers and candles.

While we ignited incense and candles

إذا حاولتَ رفعَ الضيم فاضرب

إذا حاولتَ رفعَ الضيم فاضرب

بسيف محمدٍ واهجر يسوعا

بسيف محمدٍ واهجر يسوعا

If you seek to throw off oppression, then strike

If you try to lift oppression, then strike

with Muhammad's sword, and forsake Jesus.

With the sword of Muhammad and abandon Jesus

أحبوا بعضكم بعضًا وُعظنا

أحبوا بعضكم بعضًا وُعظنا

بها ذئبًا فما نجَّت قطيعا

بها ذئبًا فما نجَّت قطيعا

"Love one another"—we preached

"Love each other" we were preached

these words to a wolf, yet they saved no flock.

With it a wolf, it never saved a flock

ألا أنزلتَ إنجيلاً جديدًا

ألا أنزلتَ إنجيلاً جديدًا

يعلِّمنا إباءً لا خنوعا

يعلِّمنا إباءً لا خنوعا

Will you not send down a new Gospel

Have you not revealed a new gospel

that teaches us defiance, not servility?

That teaches us refusal, not submission

أجِرنا من عذاب النير لا من

أجِرنا من عذاب النير لا من

عذاب النار إن تك مستطيعا

عذاب النار إن تك مستطيعا

Deliver us from the torment of the yoke, not from

Save us from the torment of slavery, not from

the torment of fire, if you are able.

The torment of hell, if you are able

ويا لبنان مات بَنوك موتاً

ويا لبنان مات بَنوك موتاً

وكنت أظنَّهم هجعوا هجوعا

وكنت أظنَّهم هجعوا هجوعا

And, O Lebanon, your sons are truly dead,

Oh Lebanon, your children died a death

and I had thought they were merely sleeping.

And I thought they were sleeping a deep sleep

ألم ترهم ونار الحرب تُصلى

ألم ترهم ونار الحرب تُصلى

كأنَّ دماءهم جمدت صقيعا

كأنَّ دماءهم جمدت صقيعا

Did you not see them, as the fire of war blazed,

Did you not see them while the fire of war was burning

as though their blood had frozen into frost?

As if their blood had frozen to ice

بدت لك فرصةٌ لتعيش حرًّا

بدت لك فرصةٌ لتعيش حرًّا

فحاذرْ أن تكون لها مُضيعا

فحاذرْ أن تكون لها مُضيعا

A chance has arisen for you to live free;

An opportunity appeared for you to live free

so take care not to squander it.

So beware not to waste it

وما لك بعد هذا اليوم يومٌ

وما لك بعد هذا اليوم يومٌ

فإن لم تستطعْ لن تستطيعا.

فإن لم تستطعْ لن تستطيعا.

And after this day, you will have no other day;

And you have no day after this day

for if you cannot, you will never be able.

If you cannot, you will not be able
