نصحتُكI counseled you، ياO نفسُsoul، لاdo not تطمعيyearn for more
وقلتُand I said: حذارِbeware! فلمyet did not تسمعيyou listen
I counseled you, O soul: do not yearn for more.
I urged you, O soul, do not be greedy
And I said, 'Beware!' Yet you did not listen.
And I said: Beware! But you did not listen
فإنfor if كنتِyou are تستسهلينyou consider easy الوداعَparting
كماas تدَّعينyou claim إذًاthen ودّعيbid farewell!
For if you find parting easy,
If you think bidding farewell is easy
As you claim, then bid farewell!
As you claim, then bid farewell!
رزمتُI packed الثيابthe clothes، فَلِمْso why تُحجمينَyou hesitate
وفِيمَand why ارتعاشُكyour trembling فيin أضلعيmy ribs؟
I packed the clothes—why, then, do you hesitate,
I packed my clothes, so why do you hesitate
And why do you tremble within my ribs?
And why does your trembling shake my ribs?
ألاdo you not تسمعينyou hear صياحَthe cries of الرّفاقِthe companions
وتجديفَand the cursing of حُوذيِّناour coachman: أسرعيhurry؟
Do you not hear the companions' cries
Do you not hear the shouting of friends
And our coachman's cursing? Hurry!
And our rowers urging: Hurry!
رأيتُI saw السعادةَhappiness أختَsister القَنُوعِthe contented person
وخلتُand I imagined السعادةَhappiness فيin المطمعِambition
I saw happiness as the contented one's sister,
I saw happiness, sister of contentment
And imagined happiness lay in ambition.
And I deemed happiness to be in greed
ولمَّاand when بداbecame apparent لكto you عزميmy resolve قنعْتِyou were content
وهيهاتand far from it يُجديكit benefits you أنthat تَقنعيyou be content
And when my resolve became clear to you, you were content,
And when my resolve became clear to you, you were content
But your contentment will not avail you.
Yet in vain you hope to be content
خرجتُI set out أجرُّكI drag you جرَّthe dragging of الكسيحِthe cripple
تئنِّينyou moan فيin صَدريَmy breast المُوجَعaching
I set out, dragging you as one drags a cripple,
I dragged you along, dragging of the lazy
As you moaned within my aching breast.
Moaning within my aching chest
ولمَّاand when غدوناwe came to be بنِصْفِhalfway along الطريقِthe road
رجعتِyou turned back، وليتَكِand would that you لمdid not ترجعيyou turn back
And when we were halfway along the road,
And when we reached halfway
You turned back—would that you had not!
You turned back, would that you had not returned
لئنif indeed كنتِyou are، ياO نفسُsoul، معْwith منthose whom أُحبُّI love
فلِمْthen why ذاthis اشتياقيmy longing، ولِمْand why أدمعيmy tears؟!
If indeed, O soul, you are with those I love,
If you, O soul, are with those I love
Then why this longing of mine, and why my tears?
Why then this yearning, and why these tears?!
أَظنُّكI think you are تائهةًlost فيin البحارِthe seas
فلاso not أنتِyou معْهُمْwith them، ولستِand you are not معيwith me
I think you are lost upon the seas,
I think you are lost at sea
So you are neither with them nor with me.
You are neither with them, nor with me
كفاكenough for you اضطرابًاturmoil كصدرlike the breast of المُحيطِthe ocean
قِفيstand still حيثُwhere أنتyou are، ولاand do not تجزعيlose heart
Enough of your turmoil, like the ocean's breast!
Enough confusion, like the ocean's heart
Stay where you are, and do not lose heart.
Stand where you are, do not panic
سأقضيI shall fulfill بنفسيby myself حقوقthe dues of العُلاglory
وأرجعُand I shall return، فانتظريso await مَرجعِيmy return
I shall myself pay glory its dues,
I will fulfill my dues of glory
And return—so await my return.
And return, so await my return
