منbecause of سيئgrievous النبأthe news الجليلmomentous الساريtraveling by night
من سيئ النبأ الجليل الساري
The carefree one slept; the anguished one did not close an eye,
The name of Al-Khali and how dense its heat
Because of the grievous, momentous news borne through the night.
With the terrible news spreading far and wide
منbecause of مثلهits like تمسيspend the evening النساءthe women حواسراًbareheaded
من مثله تمسي النساء حواسراً
وتقومand rise معولةwailing معwith الأسمارِthe nightly gatherings
وتقوم معولة مع الأسمارِ
At news like this, women spend the evening bareheaded,
The likes of it turn women into mourners
And rise wailing amid the nightly gatherings.
And up rise the wailers with their tools at eventide
مَنwhoever كانwas مسروراًpleased بمقتلat the slaying of مالكMalik
مَن كان مسروراً بمقتل مالك
فليأتthen let him come to نسوتناour women بنصفat the middle of نهارِthe day
فليأت نسوتنا بنصف نهارِ
Whoever rejoices at Malik's slaying,
Whoever rejoiced at the murder of Malik
Let him come to our women at midday.
Let him come to our women in broad daylight
قدindeed كنَّthey used to يخبأنhide الوجوهthe faces تستراًto remain veiled
قد كنَّ يخبأن الوجوه تستراً
واليومand today حينwhen بدونَthey appeared للنظارِto the onlookers
واليوم حين بدونَ للنظارِ
They used to hide their faces, keeping themselves veiled;
Once they hid their faces shyly from all
And today, when they appear before onlookers,
Now barefaced they stand exposed to open sight
يجدhe finds النساءthe women حواسراًbareheaded يندبنهthey lament him
يجد النساء حواسراً يندبنه
يضربنَthey strike أوجههنtheir faces بالأحجارِwith stones
يضربنَ أوجههن بالأحجارِ
He will find the women bareheaded, lamenting him,
The women mourn him like bereaved widows
Striking their faces with stones.
Beat their faces with hands uncontained in their plight
يخمشنthey claw حراتthe finest parts الوجوهof the faces علىin mourning for امرئٍa man
يخمشن حرات الوجوه على امرئٍ
سهلِgentle الخليقةin disposition طيبgood الأخبارِin repute
سهلِ الخليقة طيب الأخبارِ
They claw their cheeks in mourning for a man
They lacerate tender cheeks for a man
Gentle in disposition, good in repute.
Gentle of nature, kind and upright
أفبعدis it then after مقتلthe slaying of مالكMalik بنson of زهيرٍZuhayr
أفبعد مقتل مالك بن زهيرٍ
ترجوhope for النساءthe women عواقبresulting offspring الأطهارِintervals free of menstruation
ترجو النساء عواقب الأطهارِ
Is it then, after the slaying of Malik ibn Zuhayr,
After Malik bin Zuhair's murder
That women hope for the fruits of their periods of purity?
Do the women hope for rewards of the contrite?
ماnot إنat all أرىI see فيin قتلهhis slaying لذويfor those possessing الحجاsound judgment
ما إن أرى في قتله لذوي الحجا
إلاexcept المطيَّthe riding camels تشدُّare strapped بالأكوارِwith camel saddles
إلا المطيَّ تشدُّ بالأكوارِ
In his slaying I see, for men of judgment, nothing
In his killing I see no glory whatsoever
But riding camels being strapped with saddles,
But horses saddled up for the raid and fight
ومجنباتand mares led alongside ماnot يذقنthey taste عُذوفةًa morsel of food
ومجنبات ما يذقن عُذوفةً
يقذفنthey cast forth بالمُهراتthe fillies والأمهارِand the colts
يقذفن بالمُهرات والأمهارِ
And mares led alongside, tasting no morsel of feed,
Unweaned camels who taste no udhuf for years
Casting forth their fillies and colts,
Cast off their litters and ropes in their fright
ومساعراand kindlers of war صدأrust الحديدof iron عليهمupon them
ومساعرا صدأ الحديد عليهم
فكأنماso, as though طليwere coated الوجوهthe faces بقارِwith pitch
فكأنما طلي الوجوه بقارِ
And kindlers of war with iron's rust upon them,
Hot brands on faces as if to hide
As though their faces had been coated with pitch.
The shame and dishonor of blood debt's blight
ياoh ربmany a مسرورٍdelighted person بمقتلِat the slaying of مالكٍMalik
يا رب مسرورٍ بمقتلِ مالكٍ
ولسوفand surely will يصرفهturn him لشرto the worst محارِoutcome
ولسوف يصرفه لشر محارِ
Ah, many a man rejoices at Malik's slaying,
Oh Lord, whoever rejoiced at Malik's murder
And it will surely bring him to the worst of ends.
Will be led into evil and Hell's own night
