They came together, a dark-armored host spread wide,
urging men toward death and seizing champions by force.
صريفthe grinding أنيابهاof its fangs صوتthe sound الحديدof iron إذاwhen
صريف أنيابها صوت الحديد إذا
فضَّbroke off الحديثconversation بهاwithin it أبناؤهاits sons الوفرُnumerous
فضَّ الحديث بها أبناؤها الوفرُ
The grinding of its fangs is the clang of iron when
its many sons break off their talk within it.
ودرهاand its milk الموتdeath يقريoffers hospitality فيwithin مخالبهاits talons
ودرها الموت يقري في مخالبها
للواردينto those coming to water يوفيgives in full شربهits allotted draught القدرُFate
للواردين يوفي شربه القدرُ
Its milk is death, offering hospitality within its talons
to those who come to water; Fate gives its draught in full.
منwhoever اقتراهاseeks its hospitality قرتoffer hospitality to كفاهhis two hands حتفهماtheir own doom
من اقتراها قرت كفاه حتفهما
أوor اجتلاهاbeholds it بداappears منهاfrom it لهto him عِبَرُlessons
أو اجتلاها بدا منها له عِبَرُ
Whoever seeks its hospitality, his two hands host their own doom;
or whoever beholds it sees lessons emerge from it.
فيin جوهاits midst البيضthe bright swords والماذيand fine mail مختلطintermingled
في جوها البيض والماذي مختلط
والجردand sleek horses والمردand beardless youths والخطيةand spears of al-Khatt السمرُdusky
والجرد والمرد والخطية السمرُ
In its midst are mingled bright swords and fine mail,
and sleek steeds, beardless youths, and dusky spears of al-Khatt.
حتىuntil إذاwhen واجهتهمyou faced them وهيwhile it was كالحةscowling
حتى إذا واجهتهم وهي كالحة
شوهاءُhideous منهاfrom it حمامُthe allotted doom الموتِof death ينتظرُis expected
شوهاءُ منها حمامُ الموتِ ينتظرُ
Until, when you faced them as it scowled,
hideous, with death's doom expected from it,
جاءَتit came بكلwith every كميarmored warrior معلمٍmarked with a battle-sign ذكرٍvaliant
جاءَت بكل كمي معلمٍ ذكرٍ
فيin كفهhis palm ذكرٌa keen blade يسعىruns بهbearing him ذكرُa stallion
في كفه ذكرٌ يسعى به ذكرُ
it came with every armored champion, marked and valiant,
a keen blade in his palm, a stallion bearing him on.
مستوردينentering as if to water الوغىthe fray للموتِfor death ردهمturning them back
مستوردين الوغى للموتِ ردهم
يومon the day الحفاظof defending honor علىfor ذوادِهمthose who repel them عسرُis difficult
يوم الحفاظ على ذوادِهم عسرُ
Entering the fray to drink of death—to turn them back
on honor's day is hard for those who would repel them.
لهمthey have سرابيلtunics منof ماءthe gleam الحديدof iron ومنand of
لهم سرابيل من ماء الحديد ومن
نضحthe spattering الدماءof blood سرابيلtunics لهمthey have أخرُothers
نضح الدماء سرابيل لهم أخرُ
They have tunics of gleaming iron, and of
spattered blood they have other tunics,
مظاهراتlayered one over another عليهمupon them يومon the day بأسهمof their fierce fighting
مظاهرات عليهم يوم بأسهم
لونانtwo colors جُونٌdark وأخرىand others فوقهاabove them حُمرُred
لونان جُونٌ وأخرى فوقها حُمرُ
layered upon them on the day of their fierce fighting:
two colors: dark tunics, and red ones over them.
فيon يومa day حتفof death يهالare terrified الناظرونthe onlookers لهat it
في يوم حتف يهال الناظرون له
ماnot إنemphasizing the negation تبينis visible لهin it شمسsun ولاnor قمرُmoon
ما إن تبين له شمس ولا قمرُ
On a day of death that terrifies onlookers,
neither sun nor moon is visible in it.
فالبيضso the bright swords يهتفنcry out والأبصارand the eyes طامحةstaring upward
فالبيض يهتفن والأبصار طامحة
مماat what ترىthey see وخدودand the cheeks القومof the men تنعفرُare rubbed in dust
مما ترى وخدود القوم تنعفرُ
The bright swords cry out, and eyes stare upward
at what they see, while the men's cheeks are rubbed in dust.
تكسوهمُclothe them مرهفاتٌkeen-edged blades غيرnot محدثةٍnewly fashioned
تكسوهمُ مرهفاتٌ غير محدثةٍ
يشفيcures اختلاسُthe swift snatching ضباهاof their edges منwhoever بهin him is صعرُa haughty neck-tilt
يشفي اختلاسُ ضباها من به صعرُ
Keen-edged blades clothe them, not newly fashioned,
their edges' swift strokes curing whoever holds his neck haughtily.
هِنديةIndian-made كاشتعالlike the flare البرقof lightning يعصمهمshields them
هِندية كاشتعال البرق يعصمهم
بهاwith them مغاويرdaring raiders عنin defense of أحسابهمtheir ancestral honor غِيرُzealously protective
بها مغاوير عن أحسابهم غِيرُ
Indian blades, like lightning's flare; the men are shielded
with these by daring raiders, zealous for their ancestral honor.
