أذلكIs that أمor ضرسٌa clump منof النخلِthe palms مُترَعٌbrimful
أذلك أم ضرسٌ من النخلِ مُترَعٌ
بواديin the valley of القُرىthe villages (al-Qura) فيهin it العيونُthe springs الرواجِعُever-renewing
بوادي القُرى فيه العيونُ الرواجِعُ
Is that it, or a luxuriant clump of palms
Is that or a palm tree's tooth sprouting
in Wadi al-Qura, with its ever-renewing springs?
In the valleys of Qura, where returning eyes roam
لهit has سعفٌpalm fronds جَعدٌcurled وَليفٌand palm fiber كأنَّهُas though it were
له سعفٌ جَعدٌ وَليفٌ كأنَّهُ
حواشيfringes بُرودٍstriped cloaks حاكَهُنَّwove them الصَوانِعُthe craftswomen
حواشي بُرودٍ حاكَهُنَّ الصَوانِعُ
It has curled fronds, and fiber that seems like
It has disheveled, fibrous fronds, as though
the fringes of striped cloaks woven by craftswomen.
They were the trim of a cloak, woven by skilled hands
إذاwhen ماتdies مِنّاamong us سيِّدٌa lord قامَarises بَعدَهُafter him
إذا مات مِنّا سيِّدٌ قامَ بَعدَهُ
لَهُto him خَلَفٌa successor يَكفِيis equal to السيادةَleadership بارِعُoutstanding
لَهُ خَلَفٌ يَكفِي السيادةَ بارِعُ
When a lord among us dies, after him rises
When one of our leaders dies, after him
an outstanding successor to him, equal to leadership,
Rises a successor, excelling in rule
منfrom ابنائِهِhis sons والعِرقُand the root (lineage) يَنصُرُsupports فَرعَهُits branch
من ابنائِهِ والعِرقُ يَنصُرُ فَرعَهُ
علىover أصلِهِits stock والعِرقُand the root (lineage) للعِرقِto the root نازعُdrawn
على أصلِهِ والعِرقُ للعِرقِ نازعُ
from among his sons; and the root helps its branch prevail
One of his sons, and blood defends its branch
over its stock, and root is drawn to root.
On its root, and blood contends against blood
