    Listen: do tell Ibn al-Tufayl, and tell

    Humayd ibn Qays—the messenger is trustworthy—

    ولكن ستُقْضَى والديونُ دُقونُ

    That you shall not get away with spilling our blood;

    But it shall be repaid, for debts are binding.

    We shall keep you company on a day repaying the day of Suhama,

    At which the beautiful women’s tresses will turn gray.

    And eyes among you will grow hot as we exact repayment

    For what cooled eyes among you yesterday:

    Blood for blood, and violation for violation in kind.

    Such is war: tender at one time, treacherous at another.
