My childhood companion: we played together, studied at a primary school near our home, and attended the same secondary school; when I reached twenty, I left the country for many reasons whose details I do not like to go into...
And I grieved when I learned he had been killed and, after his death, had become a great symbol of pride for my city, which I had left.

Everyone has his name on their lips and talks about his heroic deeds and sacrifices.
But when I visited the country after four decades spent abroad, I headed for his famous statue, which I had heard stood in the middle of the city...

He was the only one who knew my intention to flee. At the time, he advised me to stay and endure... I admit I am not as brave as he was. I embraced him, and his face—the face I had known him by—was dripping with sorrow and anguish. He said to me:

His features, preserved in my memory since the moment of farewell, had changed... the contours of his face... his hair... his gaze... his kindness—everything about him was strange and far removed from how he looked... Nothing remained of him but his name, engraved on the stone beneath his feet!
I yelled, "It is not him!"
