لَمdid not أَرَI see خَيلاًhorsemen مِثلَهاlike them يَومَon the day أَدرَكَتthey overtook
لَم أَرَ خَيلاً مِثلَها يَومَ أَدرَكَت
بَنيsons of شَمَجىShamaja خَلفَbehind اللُهَيمِal-Luhaym عَلىon ظَهرِa ridge
بَني شَمَجى خَلفَ اللُهَيمِ عَلى ظَهرِ
I have never seen horsemen like them, on the day they overtook
I have not seen horses like them on the day
Banu Shamaja behind al-Luhaym, upon a ridge:
When the sons of Shamja pursued them behind the sandhills
أَبَرَّmore faithful بِأَيمانٍto oaths وَأَجراand bolder مُقدَماًin the charge
أَبَرَّ بِأَيمانٍ وَأَجرا مُقدَماً
وَأَنقَضَand better at settling مِنّاthan us لِلَّذيfor that which كانَwas مِنof وِترِa blood debt
وَأَنقَضَ مِنّا لِلَّذي كانَ مِن وِترِ
truer to their oaths and bolder in the charge,
They swore oaths and went forward leading
and better than us at settling an outstanding blood debt.
And they broke away from us for what was destined
عَشِيَّةَon the evening قَطَّعناwe severed قَرائِنَbonds بَينِناbetween us
عَشِيَّةَ قَطَّعنا قَرائِنَ بَينِنا
بِأَسيافِناwith our swords وَالشاهِدونَand the witnesses بَنوsons of بَدرِBadr
بِأَسيافِنا وَالشاهِدونَ بَنو بَدرِ
That evening we severed the bonds between us
In the evening we severed the ties between us
with our swords, while Banu Badr stood witness.
With our swords while the witnesses were the sons of Badr
فَأَصبَحتُso morning found me قَدalready حَلَّتwas discharged يَمينيmy oath وَأَدرَكَتand they exacted
فَأَصبَحتُ قَد حَلَّت يَميني وَأَدرَكَت
بَنوsons of ثُعَلٍThu‘al تَبليmy vengeance وَراجَعَنيand returned to me شِعريmy poetry
بَنو ثُعَلٍ تَبلي وَراجَعَني شِعري
So by morning my oath was discharged, and
So I awoke having freed my oath and attained
Banu Thu‘al had exacted my vengeance, and my poetry returned to me.
The sons of Tha'labah exhausted while my poetry returned to me
