البرج هذا حل فيه الهزار

This tower, in which a thousand are confined

Is a symbol that you are under siege

وإنكم تحكون أحواله

لكن أبراجكم من حجار

And you talk about its conditions

Yet your towers are made of stone

والحال أنّا مثله حالة

إن لم يكن أوسع منا مطار

The situation is that we are like it

If the airport is not more spacious than us

فإننا نيف وعشرون في

غرفة جبّ مثل جوف المغار

For we are twenty five in

A room like the belly of a cave

فنسبة الغرفة من برجه

تقضي له بالوسع في الاعتبار

So the ratio of the room to its tower

Entitles it to be more spacious

وأنه يجهر في صوته

حين نطيل الصمت عن اضطرار

And it raises its voice

When we prolong silence reluctantly

يخرج ما يضمر مكنونه

في لحنه حين نكف الخوار

It discloses what it secretly harbors

In its tune when we restrain sobbing

لا يحمل الغيظ ولا ينطوي

على الأسى إذ ننطوي بالأوار

It bears no grudge and does not harbor

Sorrow when we wrap ourselves in bedsheets

ما أتعب العيش اذا كان في

جنب مليك مستبدّ الفخار

How tiring is life when it is

Next to an arrogant tyrant

وأنحس الشعب اذا لم يكن

مستشعر المجد العظيم المنار

And how unlucky are the people if they don't

Feel the great glorious light

وأكأب الأرض التي أهلها

ما بين ثور واجم أو حمار

And how wretched is the land whose people

Are between bulls, buffaloes or donkeys

لا يدفعون الخصم عن أرضهم

كأن جرح الخصم فيهم جبار

Who do not defend their land from the enemy

As if the enemy's wound in them is severe
