The poet of Qatar, sensitive of speech, lofty of thought

And writer, eloquent orator and wise man

سائلي عن مصيبة الأدب العصري

وما ذاك حلّ بالإخوان

Ask me about the tragedy of modern literature

And what has befallen the brethren

لا تسلني وسل أميرك تعلم

سبب الخطب منه بالخلاّن

Do not ask me, but ask America, you will know

The cause of misfortunes from its disloyalty

أنا لا أحبس الجواب ولكنك

تدري الجواب من أشجاني

I do not withhold the answer but you

Know the answer from my sorrows

هذه غصتي وهذا اكتئابي

يكفياني عن البيان اللسان

This is my anguish and melancholy

That spare me from eloquent expression

واذا كان لا محيص من الردّ

فسمعاً لما يلي من بياني

And if responding is inevitable

Then listen to what follows in my statement

أنت لا تجهل الوعيد الذي كان

قريباً من الأمير المعان

You are not unaware of the threat that was

Close to the prince of Ma'an

والمقال الذي تفجر ناراً

لبني العصر من عصيّ وداني

And the article that sparked a fire

For the people of the era, both compliant and obstinate

والحسام الذي أشار اليه

في مقام يجل عن هذيان

And the sword to which he hinted

In a revered position, not madness

واليمين التي سمعت صداها

لتخرّ الرؤوس للأذقان

And the oath whose echo you heard

That bows heads to the ground

وسؤال الإله يعطيه وقتا

يحرق الكتب فيه بالنيران

And asking God to give him time

To burn the books in fires

ما أشق الحياة ما أتعب العيش

وأضناه للأديب اليماني

How hard life is, how tiring existence is

And straitened for the Yemeni writer

ليس شيء سوى الفرار علاجا

وبهذا الفرار نيل الأماني

Nothing but escape is a cure

And with this escape, wishes are attained
