1. I bade her farewell, while my heart departed with her.

    She left me behind, my liver ablaze and aching.

  2. She left me to make a habit of visiting her,

    and charged me to seek out her haunts.

  3. The utmost reach of all my hopes, their final goal,

    is that I may always see her face and hear her voice.

  4. In her absence I behold every sorrow there is;

    whenever I see her, I behold all joys at once.

  5. I have not forgotten how she paused for me, bidding farewell,

    promising that after but a little separation I would see her return;

  6. nor how she went from where I stood, turning back,

    like a doe bending her slender neck toward her fawn,

  7. gazing toward me with her eyes and with her silence,

    while the tears on my cheek mirrored the tears in hers.

  8. God be praised for the age’s choicest wine, so surpassingly fair!

    Glory be to Him who fashioned her as the very essence of grace.

  9. When she appears, I see the light go on before her;

    when she turns away, I see the light follow her.
