إذا رمت أن تحظى بشعر مهذب

بليغ سليقي عديم التكلف

If you wish to enjoy refined poetry

Eloquent, natural, free of affectation

يمر كسلسال حلا في طلاوة

بالطف أسلوب خلا عن تعسف

Flowing smoothly, sweetly gentle

In subtle style, free of coercion

يحاكي انسجام الماء عند انحداره

فيشربه الذوق السليم ويكتفي

Mimicking the harmony of water as it flows down

Drunk in by good taste, and it suffices

فدونك ديواناً من الشعر دونه

دواوين اسلاف كروض مسلف

Beyond books of earlier masters, like well-watered gardens

So this is a weaving of rhetoric

فذلك نظم بالبيان منقش

ونقاشه البدر الذي ليس يختفي

Embroidered by the moon that does not hide

We say, Al-Nawala Effendi, one who is spoken of

نقولا افندي من يقال بقوله

ويصغي له القلب الذكي ويحتفي

The wise heart listens to him and holds him in esteem

So whoever wishes to compose poetry follows his path

فمن شاء نظم الشعر يسلك سبيله

ويجري كمجراه الجميل ويقتفي

And flows like his beautiful flow and pursues it

Is not he who lit up and winked with his lightening

اليس الذي وشى ونمنم برده

فتى يجتبيه كل شهم ويصطفي

A young man chosen by every valiant and selected

A gentle, friendly, virtuous man except

بريع وديع فاضل غير انه

اديب اريب كامل ذو تلطف

He is an adept, well-versed, full of refinement

And I am not one who aimed to enumerate his traits

وما أنا ممن رام حصر صفاته

ولكن ببعض من مزاياه اكتفي

But with some of his qualities I suffice
