سفرت فخلنا بارقاً لاح من بدر

بل البعض وهنا ظن يوشع في السفر

I traveled so let a lightning flash from the full moon appear

Some here thought Joshua was traveling

وخلنا محياك البهيج وخاله

خيالاً من الليل البهيم على الفجر

And let your beautiful image and its uncle

Be an illusion from the dreadful night at dawn

قفي تخبري عن حال حسنك في الغنى

وعن حسن حالي في هواك على فقري

Stand and tell me about the state of your beauty in prosperity

And about the state of my love for you in my poverty

حكى عن أخيك البدر خالك نكتة

على الوجه ان الحسن عمك في وفر

Your brother the moon told a joke

On the face that beauty is your paternal uncle in abundance

بحر الهوى أحرقت بل مذ بحره

خذي بيدي أغرقت يا دمية القصر

The sea of love burned me since its sea

Take my hand, I drowned O doll of the palace

أما والهوى العذري مالي عاذلٌ

بحبك بل كل الورى قبلوا عذري

As for the chaste love I have no one to blame

For loving you, rather all people accepted my excuse

وما شهدوا منك الجمال وإنما

وصفتك بالاجمال في غزل الشعر

And they did not witness your beauty, but rather

I described you in general in the poetry of verse

وقد عرفوا من فضل ربي سجيتي

بأني لم أكذب بنظم ولا نثر

And they knew from the grace of my Lord my nature

That I have not lied in prose or verse

وإني لم امدح سوى من توفرت

به موجبات المدح والحمد والشكر

And I do not praise anyone except those who have

The qualities of praise, thanks and gratitude

كمدحي الأمير المرتضى ذا العلا بما

يليق إذا يتلى بأوصافه الغر

Like my praise of the commendable Prince, with what

Is appropriate when recited with his noble descriptions

وإني إذا أغربت يوما بمدحه

فلا حرج اني أحدث عن بحر

And if I am a stranger one day in praising him

There is no shame that I talk about the dignified sea

وقور له تعنو الأفاضل هيبةً

وحلماً عليه أضعف الناس يستجري

He is humble, the best of people seek his awe

And forbearance, the weakest of people seek refuge in him

سلالة أفراد الزمان الذي خلا

كما هو معلوم سلافة ذا العصر

The lineage of the individuals of the past time

As it is known, the ancestors of this era

فضيل به عرق السيادة ثابت

الأب والجد الشهيرين بالفخر

Virtue in him, steady noble origin

The famous father and grandfather in pride

له طارف المجد الرفيع بفضله

وتالده السامي الذي منهما يسري

The cheerful glory is his merit

And his high birth from which it flows

ومن مثله والأصل والفضل والندا

له وجميل الرأي والفعل والذكر

And from the like of him, origin, merit and peerage

For him, and good opinion, deed and mention

إذا تلت السمار رائق مدحه

تفوح عليهم منه رائحة العطر

If the night companions recite his praise

A scent of perfume emanates from him

ولو درت الأطيار منه نشدةً

تغنت بها من فوق أغصانها الخضر

If the birds knew one of his poems

They would sing it atop their green branches

لقد ساد في كلا العلا غير أنه

يبيض وجه العدل في حلك الدهر

He has excelled in both heights, and yet

He whitens the face of justice in the rotation of time

همام له طبع سليم وهمة

لديها صغيراً ينقضي أعظم الأمر

He has a sound nature and ambition

With which the greatest matter is fulfilled

ومعرفة قد ضافرتها فراسة

يكاد بأسرار الأنام بها يدري

And a knowledge intertwined with insight

He almost knows the secrets of people through it

وجود حكى الجود انهلالاً وانما

يلوح به برق الثراء من البشر

Generosity told of his flowing generosity

The lightning of generosity flashes from humans through him

وإن جاءه ذو الظلم يرجع خاسراً

وإن جاءه المظلوم يرجع بالنصر

If the unjust comes to him, he returns losing

If the wronged comes to him, he returns victorious

سمعت بما يزدان لفظي بذكره

وآمل أن يزداد في خبري خبري

I heard what adorns my words by mentioning it

And I hope my news increases through it

فلا زال مسرور الفؤاد منعما

سعيداً طويل الباع والذيل والعمر

So my heart remains delighted, blessed

Happy, long lasting, with a long tail and life
