    لقد شاخ الزمان وأنت كهلُ

    O father of Egypt, source of its bounty

    Time has aged as you grow old

  2. بنى لك آل فرعون صروحا

    عُبدت بها وأنت لذاك أهلُ

    The house of Pharaoh built palaces for you

    You were worshipped in them, as you deserve

  3. فما نفس رأت نعماً غزاراً

    وخصباً لا يقوم لديه محلُ

    No soul has seen abundant, fertile grace

    With no equal under the sun

  4. وكان الشكر مرمى ناظريها

    ورَبُّ الكون لم يدركه عقلُ

    Gratitude was the goal of its gaze

    Yet the Lord of all was beyond its grasp

  5. بمشركة إذا شكرت صنيعاً

    عن الإدراك صانعه يجلُّ

    When you thank the work of another

    You still fail to comprehend its maker

  6. فإنَّ الفضل يعرفه ذووه

    وفضل النيل لا يعلوه فضلُ

    For favour is known by its recipients

    And the Nile’s grace has no equal

  7. أبا مصر مضت حقب طوال

    وأنت تجود بالخيرات مضرا

    O father of Egypt, long eras have passed

    While you generously bestow goodness

  8. تجيء بها من السودان عفوا

    وتنثرها على الأرضين نثرا

    Bringing it freely from the Sudan

    Scattering it over the lands in abundance

  9. بحيرات الجنوب لك الجواري

    نواصرها لديك تطيع أمرا

    The southern lakes are your maidens

    Obeying your command as captives

  10. فتجرف ترب أحباش ودنكا

    وتسبكه فيصبح فيك تبرا

    So you sweep up Abyssinian clay and silt

    Mixing it until it turns to your soil

  11. وتحمله على حمر المطايا

    تسيل بها البطاح الجرد بجرا

    Bearing it on the red camels’ backs

    Making the barren plains flow in streams

  12. سخاه لا يرى شحّ لديه

    وجود البحر عند النيل بخل

    A generous man who knows no stinginess

    The sea’s abundance cannot match the Nile’s grace

  13. أبا مصر أتدري كم شعوب

    بواديك استعزّوا ثم هانوا

    O father of Egypt, do you know how many nations

    Have been honoured then disgraced in your valley

  14. موات الأرض أحيوه قديما

    فحلّ محلّ قاحلها جنان

    You gave life long ago to dead wastelands

    Replacing their barrenness with orchards

  15. مهندسهم درى مسح الأراضي

    وجرّ الثقل ما كان الوزن

    Their architect knew how to survey the land

    And haul loads beyond imagination's grasp

  16. بنوا الأهرام محكمة الزوايا

    لديها كل صرح مستهان

    They built the pyramids, precise in angles

    With every edifice made insignificant

  17. لها الشعرى دليل مستمرّ

    ونجم القطب ما كرّ الزمان

    The Pole Star their continuous guide

    As the centuries course by

  18. وفيها من بديع الصنع آي

    إلى صنّاعنا لم يوح مثل

    In them, ingenious wonders reside

    That never occurred to our builders

  19. هياكلهم كتاب جاء فيه

    حديث ملكوهم من قبل مينا

    Their temples contain a chronicle

    Of their kings before Memphis

  20. ترى جدرانها والنقش فيها

    فتحسبه طلاسم ساحرينا

    You see their walls and inscriptions

    Assuming them sorcerers' spells and signs

  21. رآه العرب منذ التح لغزا

    فأمسى مغلقا هذي السنينا

    The Arabs saw them as an enigma

    Remaining closed for these long years

  22. ولكن في بلاد الغرب قوم

    رأوا جحد المحال هدى ودينا

    But in the West are people

    Who consider rejecting wonders as religion

  23. فأمضوا خيل عزمهم فجلّت

    وحازت كشف سرّ الغابرينا

    So they set out with resolute horses

    And succeeded in unveiling the ancient mystery

  24. تواريخ وأخبار ووصف

    لملك دام لم يدخله فصل

    Histories, tales, and descriptions

    Of a kingdom no season disrupted

  25. صروح الدين لم يثبت سواها

    بوادي النيل من أثر مجيد

    Sacred structures none but them erected

    In the Nile Valley as glorious ruins

  26. تعلّقت النفوس بها فكرّت

    دهور وهي في عيش رغيد

    Souls cling to them, meditating

    Through prosperous, tranquil eras

  27. يواصلها العواهل بالهدايا

    وكهّان الهياكل بالنشيد

    Sustained by pilgrims' gifts

    And temples' priests with hymns

  28. وأهل القطر طرّا بالعطايا

    لرب الغيب عن كرم وجود

    The land's people well-endowed with charity

    For the Lord of the unknown's generosity

  29. عبادات النفوس الأمر فيها

    لآمال النفوس بلا محيد

    Worship matters to yearning souls

    For hopes without limits

  30. ومال في سبيل البرّ يعطى

    لأفضل ما ازدرعت وتستغلّ

    Money for good is donated

    To make the most of what's planted and reaped

  31. مدافنهم خلود النفس فيها

    أدلّته على نهج أنيق

    Their tombs promise the soul's eternity

    Guided by an elegant approach

  32. ترى ماضي الدفين كأن سفرا

    يترجمه بتفصيل دقيق

    You see the deceased's past as if a journey

    Translated in precise detail

  33. مغازيهوما قد نال منها

    من الأموال فيئا والرقيق

    Their battles and the spoils attained

    Including captives and precious loot

  34. معيشته وما أعطى وأسدى

    وما أولاه في سعة وضيق

    Their life, gifts, and aid dispensed

    In hardship and at ease

  35. وما يرجوه من نعم وزلفى

    ونفس الميت آي الحمد تتلو

    What they hope for in bounty and grace

    The soul reciting "Praise be to God"

  36. مفاخر حازها أهلوك دهرا

    وأورثها البطالس حين سادوا

    The triumphs their kin claimed through time

    Which the Ptolemies inherited when prevailing

  37. مشاعر دينهم حفظوا حراما

    وأعلوا في هياكلهم وشادوا

    They preserved religion's sanctuaries

    Elevating temples as they ruled

  38. أيمة دينهم أرضوا فأرضوا

    لفيف الشعب وارتقت البلاد

    A faithful nation they pleased who pleased them

    Lifting the spirits of the commoners and land

  39. وجاء الروم بعدهم فجاروا

    وجزّوا الصوف واحتلبوا وقادوا

    Then came the Romans corrupting

    Shearing wool, milking, and driving

  40. وبعدهم تتابعت الرزايا

    جيوشا تستحثّ وتستزاد

    After them came recurring afflictions

    Armies hurrying and multiplying

  41. بناء الملك صعب لم يرمه

    سوى العظماء والتخريب سهل

    Only the great aspired to build kingdoms

    While destruction comes easily

  42. أبا مصر مضت حجج طوال

    أواصرها التخاذل والفناء

    O father of Egypt, long ages have passed

    Bonds weakened by neglect and ruin

  43. وسلب المال والأرواح عفوا

    كأن الخلق أنعام وشاء

    Looting wealth and lives freely

    As if people were cattle and flock

  44. وتخريب البلاد فلا زروع

    وتشتيت العباد ولا عداء

    Laid waste with no crops

    Scattered people and no respite

  45. فضجّ القطر من ظلم وجور

    وكم داء يكون به الدواء

    The land loud with injustice and oppression

    When every illness has a cure

  46. فشاء الله أن مضت الليالي

    ليالي السوء وأنتشر الضياء

    God willed the dark nights passed

    The nights of evil dissipated into light

  47. وأرسل آل إصلاح وعدل

    وحسب الشعب إصلاح وعدل

    Sending a family of reform and justice

    The people deemed reform and justice enough
