1. يهنيكِ يا بلدةَ المختارِ من مُضَرِ

    قدومُ تاجِ العُلا بالنصر والظَّفر

    Rejoice, O city of the Chosen One of Muḍar,

    at glory’s crown arriving with victory and triumph;

  2. ونَظْمِ أحوالِك اللاتي قد انتشرَتْ

    عقودُ سيرتها في سائر القُطُر

    at the ordering of your affairs, whose story has spread—

    the necklaces of its course throughout every land;

  3. ونفْيِ ما حلَّ في ناديكِ من خَبَثٍ

    لِحيثُ ألقَتْ كما قد جاء في الخبر

    and at the banishment of the foulness that befell your council,

    to where it was cast, as the report has told.

  4. هذا جزاؤُهمُ بالنصِّ حين بَغَوْا

    وحاربوا اللهَ والمبعوثَ بالسُّوَر

    Such is their recompense by the sacred text, when they transgressed

    and warred against God and the Messenger sent with the suras.

  5. أليس قد أصبحوا دارًا لهجرتِه

    ومهبطَ الوحي مأوى العلم والنظر

    Have you not become the dwelling of his Hijra,

    the landing place of revelation, the home of learning and reflection?

  6. فقل لمن خسر الدنيا وضرَّتها

    في حربها أين أنت اليوم فاعتبر

    Say, then, to him who lost this world and its co-wife:

    Where are you today, after warring against her? Take heed.

  7. أين الركوبُ الذي يقضي بأنك إن

    في طيبةٍ دمتَ لا تُبقي ولا تذر

    Where is that armed host which decreed that, if

    you remained in Ṭayba, you would spare nothing and no one—

  8. فالبعض تصلبُهم والبعضُ تقتلُهم

    والبعض قصدُك نفيًا لو إلى سقر

    crucifying some of them and killing others,

    while others you meant to banish, even unto Saqar?

  9. ولم تراعِ لأهل العلم مرتبةً

    ولا لمتَّشحٍ بالفضل مُتَّزر

    You honored no rank belonging to the learned,

    nor anyone robed and girded with virtue.

  10. هذا ولما أراد الله أنَّ لنا

    لديه وجْهَ قبولٍ غير منكسر

    Yet when God willed that we should have

    in His presence a favor that would not be broken,

  11. ولا تضيعُ سدًى في بابه وبه

    أضحى توسُّلنا عِقْدًا من الدُّرَر

    and that our plea at His gate, and through Him, should not be wasted,

    our appeal became a necklace strung with pearls.

  12. هيِّئْ لنا سببًا في حلِّ عُقدتنا

    وفصْمِ عروةِ هذا البؤسِ والضرر

    He prepared for us a means to untie our knot

    and sever the bond of this misery and harm,

  13. لكي نُقلَّبَ في ظل الأمان على

    فُرْشِ السرور ونجني لذةَ الثمر

    so that beneath the shade of safety we might turn it over

    upon beds of joy and gather the fruit’s delight.

  14. وهو التصوّر للفتوى التي حظيَتْ

    بخير كُفوٍ لها في الدوْمِ مُعتبر

    It is the drafting of the legal opinion that was favored

    with the worthiest peer for it, esteemed through all time:

  15. أعني محمدًا المولى الأمينَ على

    ما قلَّدتْه أيادي الدولةِ الغُرر

    I mean Muhammad, the trustworthy master of

    what the illustrious hands of state entrusted to him—

  16. ومَن تطوَّلَ أبقى الله دولتَه

    وزاده بسطةً في العلم والعُمُر

    one whose favor endures. May God preserve his rule

    and increase his breadth in knowledge and in years,

  17. بمنَّةِ الفرمانات التي نفذَتْ

    أحكامُها حين وافى عُمدَةُ الوُزر

    by grace of the firmans that went into force,

    whose rulings took effect when the pillar of ministers arrived—

  18. جمالُ وجهِ أولي الآراءِ قاهرُ من

    عَتَوا عُتُوّاً وقوَّى عُصبةَ النفر

    the beauty of the men of counsel, vanquisher of those

    who waxed insolent and gathered strength as a band,

  19. والي دمشقٍ وحاميها محمّدُ من

    به تباهَتْ أهالي الحجِّ والعُمَر

    Damascus’s governor and defender, Muhammad, by whom

    the folk of Hajj and ʿumra took pride.

  20. لا زال وجهُ التهاني من تردُّدِه

    بين الحجاز طليقًا زاهرَ الطُّرَر

    May congratulations, through his frequent passage, never cease,

    free in the Hijaz, radiant of brow.

  21. وكم وكم من مُهِمّاتٍ قد انحدرَت

    عنها المداركُ حسْرَى أيَّ منحدر

    How many—how many—weighty matters have descended,

    before which minds fall weary: what a descent!

  22. تخالُها حين تبلوها وتخبرُها

    قد حاكتِ الفَلَكَ الدوّارَ في الصور

    You would think them, when you test them and assay their gold,

    to have imitated the revolving sphere in all its forms.

  23. وأصلها همَّةُ الشهم الذي ابتهجَتْ

    به المدينةُ حين العَوْدُ من سَفَر

    Their source is the resolve of that valiant man, in whom

    Medina rejoiced when he returned from travel.
