لِكُلِّ أُناسٍ سَيِّدٌ يَعرِفونَهُ

وَسَيِّدُنا حَتّى المَماتِ رَبيعُ

Every people has a chief whom they acknowledge;

and our chief, until death, is Rabīʿ.

إِذا أَمَرَتني بِالعُقوقِ حَليلَتي

فَلَم أَعصِها إِنّي إِذاً لَمَضيعُ

If my wife ordered me to be disloyal,

and I did not disobey her, then indeed I would be remiss.
