كلّما أجلبَ بالصمتِ الهَزِيعْ

جاءَني الشوقُ بما لا أستطيعْ

Whenever silence brings wretchedness,

Yearning comes to me beyond endurance,

سائقَ الأظعانِ والريحُ شجىً

والمدى نايٌ لهُ لحنٌ مُرِيْعْ

The driver of sorrows and the woeful wind,

And the horizon a flute with a mournful tune.

فوقَ هذي العيسِ طَرْفٌ ناعِسٌ

وأسيلٌ ناعمٌٌ حاكَىْ الربيعْ

Above this firmament a drowsy glance,

And a tender, delicate stream recalling spring.

وحبيبٌ ضامِرُ الغُصنِ إذا

مالَ ضِحْكاً قلتَ سبحانَ البديعْ

And a languishing beloved whose branch,

When he smiles, you say “Glory to the Creator”.

لا تخلفني وحيداً بعدَهُمْ

خُذْ فؤاديْ كُلُّ نبْضاتيْ شفيعْ

After them do not leave me lonely,

Take my heart, all my throbbing as intercessor.

إيهِ ما للقلبِ في ْ تِيْهِ الهوى

كلما ناداهُ داعٍ لا يطيعْ

Oh how the heart in the wilderness of passion

Whenever a caller summons it does not obey.

أوشكَ العمرُ به ما قد قضى

قومُ موسى حينما تاه الجميعْ

My life with it is nearly spent,

Like Moses' people when all went astray.

يا خَفِيَّ اللُّطْفِ أدركْ غُربتيْ

أوشكّتْ نفسيَ من نفسيْ تضيعْ

O Hidden Subtlety, realize my estrangement,

My soul is nearly lost from my soul.

وخطايايَ ارتماءٌ مُخْبِـتٌ

في مصلى الروحِ تشدو “يا سميعْ”

And my sins a humiliating discard

In the sanctuary of the spirit chanting “O All-hearing”.

إن تُعامِلْنا بعَدْلٍ مُنْصِفاً

لَهَوى قبلَ المسيئينَ المُطيعْ

If you judge us with justice and equity,

The obedient would surpass the disobedient in love.

فأَعِذْ قلبيَ إنّيْ قاربٌ

ثَقَبَ الأمنَ بهِ سوءُ الصنيْعْ

So protect my heart, I am a vessel

Whose safety was pierced by wickedness.

مُمْطِرٌ بُعْدي وإثْميْ قارسٌ

والهوى ذئبٌ وأحلامي قطيعْ

A downpour after me and my sin parching,

Passion a wolf and my dreams a flock.

فاملأنْ بالحبِّ قلباً تائهاً

لم يزلْ بالوهمِ يَسقيْ كلَّ رِيْعْ

So fill with love a wandering heart

Who by fancy continues to water every meadow.

مُطْرِقٌ في هَيْبةِ المُلْكِ وفي

عينِهِ إشفاقةُ العبدِ الوضيع

Bowing in awe of the Majesty, and in

His eyes the compassion of a lowly servant.

ذائبٌ يأملُ ألا يلتقي

أنبياءَ اللهِ بالذنب الشنيعْ

Yearning in hope he will not encounter

The prophets of God with a heinous sin.

زكّهِ واغرِسْ بجنبيهِ رضىً

كالرضى الساكنِ في رمْلِ البقيعْ

Purify him and plant next to his sides approval

Like the approval residing in the sands of Al-Baqee.

كُنْ لهٌ مِنْهُ وصِلْهُ واحْمِهِ

فهو في قبضةِ دنياهُ الصريعْ

Be for him an ally, join him, and protect him,

For he is in the grip of his overpowering world.

خُذْهُ من شأنَ بِهِ اليأسُ طفى

فوقَ كَتْفيهِ إلى شأنٍ رفيعْ

Take him from the state of despair that extinguished

Above his shoulders to a lofty state.

إنْ يكُنْ طِينُ الخطايا لمّهُ

وسقاهُ الحزنُ كأساً من ضَرِيع

If the clay of sins has touched him

And sorrow gave him a cup from the frequent pouring.

روحُهُ قِنديلُ نورٍ لو سَرى

بضياها الليلُ ليلاً لن يَضيعْ

His spirit a lantern of light, if the night

Traveled in its splendor, the night will not be lost.
