قلب المحب من الهجران مكلوم

ودمعه من فراق الصحب مسجوم

The lover's heart is pained by separation,

And his tears are shed for parting from companions.

وصبره عيل فاعتلت جوارحه

كأنه من جواء البين محموم

His patience is weak, so his limbs are disabled,

As if he is delirious from the intensity of estrangement.

يشكو البعاد ولن يشفيه من أحد

إلا أمون تسلى الهم غلكوم

He complains of distance, and none can cure him

Except the beloved, who calms the boiling worries,

تغري الهجير إذا ما احتثها فرقاً

كأنها كوكب بالجو مرجوم

She excites the yearning one when she turns away,

As if she is a planet wandering in the sky.

او كالمهات أحست ركض مقتنص

يسعى بغضف لهن الصيد معسوم

Or like mothers who sensed the running

Of a predator chasing the designated prey.

أقول للراكب المزجى لمائرة

كأنها أطم بالآل مزموم

I say to the rider galloping his swift she-camel,

As if she is a darkened night veiled in darkness:

يا أيها الراكب المزجى مطيته

يطوي المطاوح بالأخطار مهموم

O rider galloping your she-camel,

Worried, leaping into dangers -

بالله عرج على الأحباب إن عرضت

بك المقادير واستحانك الكوم

For God's sake, stop by the loved ones, if you are able,

When fate has tested you and the dunes opposed you,

وبلغن على شط النوى قلقاً

من شائق وامق البين مغموم

And convey over the coast of Nawa

My torment from a lover separated and worried,

قد باح بالهجر مكنوناً يكاثمه

فصبره بعد هذا البين معدوم

Who has revealed privately that which he concealed,

So his patience after this separation is destroyed.

والله ما مر يوم بعد فرقتكم

إلا وفي القلب من ذكراه يحموم

By God, no day has passed after your parting

Except my heart was aflame with thoughts of you.

يبيت يرعى نجوم الليل من وله

وذاك عند جميع الناس معلوم

It stays up tending to the stars of night in passion,

And that is known amongst all people.

يا ليت شعري على الهجر أوجب لي

وفيم حبل التصال الود مصروم

Oh, how I wish I knew what caused

The estrangement where the rope of connection is cut!

هلا سمعتم بأن الهجر مشربه

يا أهل ودي وخيم فهو مذموم

Why did you not heed that estrangement is a drink

Whose bitterness, O people of love, is condemned?

تا الله لا أستفيق الدهر أندبكم

ما صاحب الحب في المحبوب مليوم

By God, I will never awake from lamenting you

As long as the lover is blamed for loving.

او يجمع الله شملاً بالنوى انصدعت

منه العصا ففؤاد الصب مكلوم

Or may God reunite what was torn asunder,

For the youth's heart is pained when companions are lost.

أولو وفاء بعهد الحب حيث مضت

فيه العقود وحبل الود مبروم

Where are those true to the pact of love that passed

Between us, though the bonds and rope are severed?

وإن تفحصتم الأخبار مجملة

فإن منصور بالخسران موسوم

If you examine the news in general,

You'll find Mansur is marked for loss.

قد شب بالغدر طغياناً وشاب به

حتى انبرى وهو بالخذلان مخطوم

He grew arrogant and ignorant in treachery

Until he set out while branded for betrayal.

يسعى بشق العصا والنور يطفئه

والله يأبى وأمر الله محتوم

He seeks to break the pact though the light opposes him,

But God refuses, for God's command is realized.

يغالب الله والإسلام من عمه

وود لو أن حصن الدين مهدوم

He fights God and Islam out of blindness,

Wishing the fortress of the faith was demolished.

يسوقه الكبر والإعجاب من بطر

فليهنه البطر المذموم والشوم

Arrogance and admiration lead him astray,

So let the accursed and ill-omened straying humiliate him.

لما رأى عصب التوحيد قد ظهرت

يود لو أن جند الله مهزوم

When he saw the party of monotheism appear,

He wished the army of God was defeated.

والله قد وعد الإسلام نصرته

لكن ذا البغي من ذا الوعد محروم

But God has promised victory to Islam,

Though the transgressor is deprived of that promise.

ثم الصلاة على المعصوم سيدنا

من للنبيين بالإرسال مختوم

Then prayers upon our master, the seal

Of prophets, the one by whom messengers were concluded.

والآ والصحب ثم التابعين لهم

ما انهل ودق وما بالرق مرقوم

And upon his comrades and successors -

May he enjoy all that is finely ground or fluid!
