على دارس الأطلال بالمتحلب

نسيج الصبا تبكي بدمع كصيب

The one roaming the ruins with his cloak,

Weaving youth's dreams with tears like pouring rain,

لذكراك من سعدى بعامر ربعها

معاهد يصبو نحوها كل معجب

Remembering the days of happiness there,

Where lovers flocked, enchanted by its charm,

كأن لم تكن تغني بها في مسرة

وعيش لذيذ في المنى ذو تقلب

As if it never echoed with joy before,

With a sweet life of wishes come true,

فأصبحن قد أقوين من كل غادة

ودمعك سفاح كهايع هيدب

But is now stronger than any downpour

Your tears a flood, pouring heavily.

لئن كان قد أودى لك الوجد جذوة

وأصبح يذكيها المنى بالتلهب

If longing lit a spark of sorrow in you

And longing now fans the flames,

فقد زاح عني الهم والغم والأسى

بإقبال سلمى بالرضى والتحبب

Then worry, grief and pain have gone from me

With Salma's return and her affection.

لقد ذكرت عهد المحب فأقبلت

وقد آمنت عين الرقيب المؤنب

She came when I recalled our love,

Trusting, though eyes spied and told on us,

فجاءت ودمع العين يهمي تولها

على خدها بعد النوى والتغرب

Her face still wet with tears after separation

As she reproached me for breaking our bond.

تناشدني العهد القديم تقطعاً

وقد علمت سلمى بداخل مسلب

A girl whose face outshines the rising sun,

Her dark tresses like the darkest night,

فتاة كأن الشمس غرة وجهها

وليل الدجى في فاحم مثل غيهب

A smooth-necked gazelle glancing back

At the hunter pursuing her in the meadow.

كمغزلة أدماء ترنو لشادن

غضبضة طرفي رعيها وسط ربرب

Her smile reveals teeth like fresh camomile

Newly picked in the morning, glistening with dew,

وتبسم عن در نضيد كأنه

أقاح بدعصٍ خالصٍ غب صيب

Her voice captivates the wise with melodies

That surpass the strings of an oud.

ومنطقها يسبي الحليم بنغمة

تزيد على الأوتار للمتطرب

If after drinking wine's headiness, no fear

Of the angry watcher ready to rebuke,

إذا زرتها بعد الرحيق ولم تخف

عتاب المريد الكاشح المترقب

Her soft, reddened cheeks are like

Fine worked leather, delicately scented.

مرخص خضب ناعم فكأنه

من اللين هداب الدمقس المهذب

If an old man, after years of devotion

Saw her, from worship he'd surely stray.

فلو أنها تبدو لشيخ وقد خلت

عليه سنون في العباد مرائب

She's unmatched among singers, unique as

I was in love and affection for her.

لضل عن الإرشاد بعد سلوكه

وخال رشاداً ذاك بعد الترهب

Rising above friends in loyalty and faith,

The hallmarks of one who's truly refined.

لقد أصبحت في الغانيات فريدة

كما كنت فرداً في الأخا والتحبب

If the spying critics ask what molded this man,

Tell them - his manners taught him grace.

سموت على الأصحاب بالصدق والوفا

وأنهما عنوان كل مهذب

Loyal to the promise of love and brotherhood,

Never wavering despite the miles apart.

فإن سأل الواشون ما خلق الفتى

فقد كلمت أخلاقه بالتأدب

Refined, gentle, a poet of discretion

Whose morals are untouched by any stain.

حفيظ على عهد المحبة والأخا

ولم يتغير باستطاط التغرب

We spurned the foe though they sought to provoke

And come at us, but we did not draw near.

أديب أريب لوذعي مهذب

مطهرة أخلاقه عن مثلب

Yet we answered their attacks out of passion,

So my blood honored one who caused pain.

رقنا العدى من كل أوب مما ارعوى

إلى ثلبهم يوماً ولم يتقرب

Our poems were like pearls on a string,

As if polished jewels set in gold.

ولكن رماهم بالقريض حمية

فاكرم بدمي قامع للمؤنب

Reminding me of days gone by between us,

I'll not forget the love of one so refined.

وقد جاء في در القريض كأنه

لالئ اصداف بعقد مذهب

Honor it with beautiful, eloquent verses

Whose words are sweeter than honeycomb.

يذكرني العهد الذي كان بيننا

فلم أنس عهداً للمحب المهذب

O one who roams the barren desert,

Crossing empty plains after empty plains,

فأكرم به نظماً بديعاً مروقاً

وألفاظه أحلى من المتحلب

Prancing like an ostrich, shielded in feathers,

Swaying as it walks carrying eggs.

فيا أيها الغادي على ظهر ضامر

تجوب الفيافي سبسباً بعد سبسب

The desert wind debates with it

As the ostrich takes flight in alarm.

جنوح جنوق كالفينقي شملة

دفاق إذا ما احتئها ذو تحنب

Convey my greetings though we are far,

Like the scent of musk and sweetest wine,

فكالعلم السفار جادله الصبا

أو الهيف مذعور بغضفاء سبسب

After lightning, sand and pebbles,

And the weaving winds of storms.

فابلغه تسليماً على البعد والنوى

كنفخ الخزامى والرحيق المطيب

Before the coo of doves and the dawn

Of stars flickering in the sky.

بعد وميض البرق والرمل والحصى

ونسج الصبا والهابع المتحلب

Greetings from a lover, no pretense,

No boast or fabricated claim.

وما هتفت ورق الحمام بأيكة

وما لاح في الآفاق من كل كوكب

Greetings of peace, Saad, of joy and contentment

May you have the sweetest life as you search.

سلام محب لم يقل متحذلقاً

ولم يتشدق باقتراع التكذب

Unite me, my God, whenever the east grows bright

And the horizon darkens with rain,

ودم سالماً يا سعد بالسعد والرضى

بأطيب عيش للعلا في تطلب

With Muhammed the guide and trustee,

His companions and family, those who were close.

وصل إلهي كلما ذر شارق

وأظلم ديجور بماطر صيب
