أرى كل ما قد قدر الله يكتب

وليس على المولى مفر ومهرب

I see all that Allah has decreed to be written

And there is no escape for the Master

قضاء من الرحمن جل جلاله

وما قدر الرحنم لا شك أغلب

A judgement from the Most Merciful, Majestic is His Glory

And what the Most Merciful decrees, no doubt will prevail

لعمري لقد أوفى الإمام بكلها

يؤمله مما يريد ويرغب

By my life, the Imam has fulfilled them all

Hoping for what he wants and desires from them

سعى جهده في برئنا من عمائنا

وسبب أسباباً لذاك تقرب

He strove his utmost to absolve us of our sins

And established ways to get closer to that

فجازاه مولاه الرضى وأثابه

بأحسن ما يجزي به المتقرب

So his Master rewarded him with contentment and recompensed him

With the best recompense for the one who draws near

فيا من سما مجدا ًوجوداً وسودداً

حنانيك ما سر عليك محجب

Oh you whose glory, generosity and darkness have risen high

Your affection, what has made it veiled from you

سنشرح من أخبارنا بعض ما جرى

سوى ما مضى مما رقمناه يكتب

We will explain some of what has happened of our news

Besides what has passed of what we have recorded as written

ولما انقضت تلك اليالي التي لها

يؤمل منه ما أراد ويطلب

And when those nights which

He hopes from them what he wants and seeks have passed

ثمان ليال حل منا عصائباً

تشد على العينين منا وتعصب

For eight nights sickness befell us

Tying bandages over our eyes and blindfolding

فلم أر مما كنت أبصرت أولاً

بحركها من كفه ويصوب

I did not see anything of what I had seen before

With its movement from his hand and aiming

وقد صار في عيني غواشٍ وحمرة

وأوساخ ما يطفو عليها ويحجب

And my eyes became clouded and reddened

With irritants floating over them and obscuring

من الغم للعينين والعصب والأسى

وإمرار ما قد كان يؤذي ويوصب

From the sadness for the eyes and the blindfold and the sorrow

And the passing of what had been hurting and stabbing

وأرجأني خمساً وفي كل ليلة

يحاول أوساخاً تزول وتذهب

And he put off for five days, and each night

He tries to remove irritants that disappear and go away

فلم يغن شياً ما يحاول كشفه

ولا كل ما يهوي وما يتطلب

But his attempts to uncover what he tries

And everything he aspires and seeks were of no use

فميلها أخرى وكانت مريضة

وقد صابني هم شديد عصبصب

Then he inclined them again while they were ill

And intense anxiety gripped me and flooded me

أدار عليها الميل من بعد ضربها

ثلاثاً يزيد الماء عنها وينضب

He turned them over after hitting them three times

Increasing the water over them until it drained out

وهرة منها حمرة العين بالدوى

وكان شديداً حره يتلهب

The redness of the eye flowed out with medicine

And its burning heat was intense and blazing

وقد سفحت بالدم من أجل ضربها

وتهريتها بالميل أيان يضرب

And blood flowed from them because of hitting them

And overturning them with medication whenever he struck

ودامت على عيني الحرارة بالدوى

لعمر إلهي ساعة وهي توصب

And the burning remained constant in my eyes with the medicine

By my God for an hour while it stabbed

وعثمان بعد الحل للعين قد رأى

وأبصر منها ما رأى حين يضرب

And after the solution for the eyes, Uthman saw

And noticed what he saw when he hit

سوى أنه قد كان أبصر حمرة

على عينيه تعلو عليها وتحجب

Except that there had been more intense redness

Rising over his eyes and covering them

كذلك أوساخ عليها كثيرة

وورم بجفن العين يؤذي وينصب

And many irritants on them

And swelling of the eyelid that hurt and stung

فهرتها بالميل وهو مشرب

بذاك الدوى الموذي لها حين ينكب

So he overturned them with medication that he drank

With that painful medicine when it spilled over

وصرنا على ذا الحال كل عشية

يجيء إلينا بالقطور ويذهب

And we remained in that condition every evening

With him coming to us with drops and leaving

دواء لذيذ بارد لم يكن به

إذاء سوى غم لها حين يعصب

A delicious, cool medicine that had no harm in it

Except sadness for them when they were blindfolded

إلى أن مضت من حين أيام ضربها

ثلاثة أسباع تعد وتحسب

Until three weeks passed from when he hit them

Counting and reckoning

فقال لعثمان ستبصر بعد ذا

بيومين ما قد كان في الصحف يكتب

So he said to Uthman, after this you will see

In two days what had been written in the scriptures

وأما أنا فالحال إن شكايتي

وما كان من أمري يرجا ويطلب

But as for me, my condition is that my complaint

And what I hoped for and sought

على حالها ما تم لي ما أريده

إلى أن مضت عشرين والعين تعصب

Remained unchanged until twenty days passed and the eye was blindfolded

I sleep but then scarcely

أنام فلا ثم أحبس برهة

وأعراق رأسي من جوى العين تضرب

Hold back for a moment, my head throbbing from the eye medicine

And I had hoped for wellness and healing before

وقد كنت فيما قبل أرجو سلامةً

وعافية والله بالخير أقرب

And God is near to what is good

Yet here I am hoping and anticipating

وها أنا في حال الرجا مترقب

من الله ما أرجو وما أتطلب

From God what I hope for and seek

But this has only increased my illness

ولكنه قد زادني ذاك علة

وداء سوى ما كنت أرجوه يذهب

And malady besides what I hoped would go away

So this is what has worried and distressed me

فهذا الذي قد رابني وأمضني

على أني من فضله أترقب

To expect His grace

And to seek His pardon for what I have sinned

وأطلب منه العفو مما جنيته

وعافية مما يمض وينصب

And wellness from what persists and stabs

Patience has left me because I

وقد عيل مني الصبر من أجل أنني

رأيت مقامي أمره متعصب

Saw my situation was distressed

Neither has speech increased except with affectation

فلا زاد إلا بلغة يتكلف

ولا نوم إلا ريثما أتقلب

Nor sleep except briefly whenever I toss and turn
