في مظهر زان الأدب

The noble culture of Tunisia

Appears in the guise of a promiscuous writer

وطنية تحمي الحمى

تشفي السقيم من العطب

Its nationalism protects the sanctuary

Heals the sick from maladies

تسقي الزعاق عدوها

ترضي الضعيف اذا غضب

Quenches the thirst of its enemies

Satisfies the weak when angry

دينية نبراسها

يهدي الجهول اذا اضطرب

Its religion is a beacon

That guides the ignorant when lost

من بحرها طفحت سيا

سة من تكلم أو كتب

From its sea gushed forth governance

By whoever speaks or writes

تغني الرئيس عن الجلي

س وتمنح الروح الطرب

It makes the president needless of parliament

And gives the soul joy

تحريرها نسج الحري

ر ونظمها سبك الذهب

Its liberation woven with freedom

And its order cast in gold

أخبارها الحق الصر

يح ونصحها ياللعجب

Its news is the plain truth

And its advice, oh wonder!

فهي المعارف هي هي

ولا مراء ولا تعب

It is culture, it is it

No doubt nor toil

فليستتر بهلالها

شعب الأعاجم والعرب

Let the non-Arab hordes take cover

Behind its crescent

ولتمدد الأيدي لها

حتى يتيح لها الطلب

And let hands reach out to it

So it can fulfill their hopes

يا أيها الخضراء قد

جاد الزمان بما وجب

O verdant one, time

Has brought what was ordained

حان التيقظ فانهضي

واستنهضي فالسعد هب

Awaken, rise up!

The auspicious time has come

حيي الشبيبة واكشفي

عنك الحجاب لمن خطب

Give life to the youth, uncover

Your veil for those who have asked

إن الطبيعة لا ترى

إلا الظهور وإن صعب

Nature sees nothing

Except appearing, however difficult

وابن البروني مذ رآى

حسني معارفك انجذب

And when al-Buruni saw
