غضبتِ فيا لكِ من غاضبة

وأرسلتِها نظرة عاتبة

You were angry, what an angry one you are

And you sent me a reproachful glance

يتمّ فيها الرجـاء الأسيف

وتجأر فيها المنى الواثبة !

In which imploring hope whimpers

And longing leaps fretfully!

وفيها هدوء الرضا المطمئن

تمازجه الغيرة الصاخبة !

And in it is the calm of contented approval

Mingled with clamorous jealousy!

تطل بها الذكريات العِذاب

وترجع مجهدة لاغبة

In it peer torturous memories

And return, exhausted and unsuccessful

وفيها فتور ولكنه

فتور به قوة غالبة !

And in it is languor but it is

A languor with overcoming strength!

ولكن بها بعد هذا وذاك

فتون الهوى والجمال العفيف

But in it after this and that

Is the charm of love and chaste beauty

وفيها من السحر أطيافهُ

بعينيك ألمحها إذ تطيف

And in it is from magic its ghosts

I glimpse them as you wander

لالهمتني السر لما نظرت

إلي بهذا الفتور الشفوف

You have inspired me the secret when you looked

At me with this gentle languor

وحدّثتِني في خفوت عجيب

لما أضمرته لغات الطيوف

And you spoke to me in wondrous privacy

For what the whispers of ghosts have concealed

ولولا شعوري بحبي العطوف

لأحببت فيك الشعور الأسيف !

And were it not for my feeling of affectionate love

I would have liked in you the sorrowful feeling!

قد انتصر الحب يا للانتصار

بهذا العتاب وهذا الغضـب

Love has triumphed, what a triumph

With this reproach and this anger

وثقت من اليوم في حبنـا

وأنك ترعينهُ في حدب

And from today I trust in our love

And that you tend it on the hillside

فلولا اعتزازك بالحب لم

تثر في فؤادك تلك الريب

For had you not been proud of love

Would that doubt have stirred in your heart

إذن فاطمئنّي فهذا الفؤاد

يحبك في وقدة كاللهـب

So reassure yourself for this heart

Loves you in ardent fervor

يحبك إي وجمال الغضـب

يحبك إي والهوى الملتهب !

Loves you, yes, and the beauty of anger

Loves you, yes, and burning passion!

حدثيني أما تزالين غضبى ؟

أو مازال ملء نفسك ريباً ؟

Tell me, are you still angry?

Or does your soul still harbor doubts?

ولماذا الوقار والصمـت يضفي

بعدما كنت لي مراحا ووثباً ؟

And why is there dignity and silence

When once you were playful and leaping for me?

كان بالأمس كالعتاب جميلا

ما له اليوم لم يعد منك عتبا ؟

Yesterday your reproach was beautiful

Why today has reproach departed you?

صمتَ الكون مذ صمت ونامت

صادحات تردد اللحن عذبا

The universe has been silent since it fell silent

And songbirds repeating the sweet tune

أنا أخشى ولا أصرّح ماذا ؟

أنا أخشى ، فما أزال محبّـا !

I fear but do not confess what?

I fear, for I am still a lover!

ابسمي ، تبسم الحياةُ وترضى

وامنحيني اليقين ، أمنحك حبّا !

Smile, and life smiles and is content

And grant me certainty, I grant you love!
