Record, O land, and take heed, O sky,
The death of two eagles in the expanse of space,
Record it with the ink of pride, not
With the blood overflowing from the martyrs.
The death of lions in their lairs,
Not as gazelles meet their demise!
Record it as a marvel that blended
Sorrow’s grief and the overflow of solace.
And the sacrifices of glory at an altar
Where despair and hope intersect.
The sacrifice that redeems a nation—
How honourable is this redemption!
Forever the wind rages in the arena
Of clamorous gulfs, ominous howls,
Darkness within darkness vague,
Before which nullity and demise cower.
Erasing traces, ways unmapped,
No guide, no ray of light, no radiance.
And in its depths zeal fires them
Lofty resolve that refuses to wane.
They batter the winds, however it batters,
And they swerve like wisps of air.
Their souls have drunk love of heights
And they craved a life in the sky.
They willed it so, and God has willed
What was—Glory to You, You ordain what You will.
O Egypt, your consolation
Is that you are most deserving of pure salutations.
Today you have given what
A people who chose the noble life would give.
A people whose covenant
Was sworn in valour’s viscera!
And blood shed in sacrifice
Will flow in currents of gallantry.
