O night, wait gently—your appointed end draws near.

Do not depart... Let us wrap ourselves in your stillness.

Do not doze, O night of radiance, for I,

in the arms of the one I love, am lonely and trembling.

Grant respite to a lover whose homeland has grown distant,

and let the hearts drink from the streams.

Let us roam the universe together in ecstasy,

and watch the distant star without a destination.

O night, O laughing face that cries aloud,

O masterpiece unlike all other masterpieces.

O night, with one laugh you brought existence to life,

and healed an eye of tears that never dry.

You gave us drink until we were sated with delight,

and happiness—from its yāʾ all the way to the alif.

With what, then, can we celebrate, rejoicing at your smi—

—le, so radiant... when our joy defies description?

Why do I see all the stars drawn into ranks,

until, if we wished, we might stand upon al-Jawzāʾ?

Why do I see the world like a smiling child,

no longer begging for still more luxury?

What have I to do with sorrows, carrying them with me

like a ship swept away by every wave?

Does night enfold us with a thousand tales,

while morning drives us down a different road?

Is it that whenever the armies of our misery perish,

millions of seed-drops rain upon our swelling?

O night... what use is meeting, when our sorrow

is like funeral wakes stretching from Karbala to Najaf?

O sorrow, grant us respite, for our hearts

are weary... and the night, O sorrow, has reached its midpoint.

We play like children, never knowing that

death is racing ahead of us... alas!
