O home of Asma, in the heights of Edam

Among the palms, so firmly anchored

You were once a home for us, but time

Changed you, as the winds blew the dust around

Is it right to ask about the names of those departed

And exchange greetings and gifts with their descendants?

    Nor misers, nor black spiders

My grey hair, how little remained on my worn frame

She said when she saw my head wrapped up,

"Grey, ugly, bleak", after the young beauty, so radiant

To the young, while their joy lasts,

Are hearts' love, like white sand grouse

When a sun sets or rises,

And in its blessings are life's misfortunes

The neighbor, the stranger, may find joy with us,

And the beggars, as we cook the pot of the Prophet

With us is a fair, gentle maid,

Like a gazelle, of the lovely houri

She passes the tooth stick over a tender mouth

Not dirtied by what's under the wraps

Leave this and say to Sa'd's clan, praising them,

Words a raider takes to the nomads

We drove Rabi'a towards Damascus against their will

Driving the virgins by force and rebuke

If they wanted to camp, a whip hastened their journey

    No rest, relentless beating

The living Qahtan, their feet still

Have events with us, of killing and torture

    When our army met theirs

On the day of torture, in days of pillage

When they saw it was fire, stoked

By Sa'd's clan, the white-faced warriors

Abu Karib fled from us with his tribe

And followers, on trails of dromedaries
