إذا بدا قاطباً جبيناً

يروع غيري به القطوب

When he frowns, it startles others

Yet only saddens me

له علي الوفاء عمري

يصيبني منه ما يصيب

I devote my life to his loyalty

And whatever befalls me comes from him

ومنجل لم تبح ورودي

لمنجل ماؤها رطيب

His sickle never touched my roses

For its water remains pure

فيا حبيبي فدتك روحي

دع ما يجافي وما يريب

So my love I sacrifice myself for you

Leave behind all disdain and doubt

أنا المعنى وأنت شغلي

لا اتسلى ولا أتوب

I am the meaning and you are my work

I find no comfort or repentance

أنت ذنوبي كل ذنوبي

تباركت كلها الذنوب

You are all my sins, every sin

Blessed are all my sins

إني إذا بعدت عني

شيء كئيب هنا غريب

When I’m away from myself

No light guides without you, the water

لا النور يهدي وأنت ماء

لا يغني ولا يؤوب

That does not benefit or cure

No fragrant breeze excites

ولا الرياحين مغريات

ولا المغاني ولا الطيوب

No songs or instruments

And every night the sorrow

وكل ليل نجي هم

تذوب نفسي ولا يذوب

Melts my soul but does not melt away
