Are you the one I once loved for a time,
you who were the bliss of this far-off exile’s heart?
Why do I see you, long estranged, so pale,
emaciated, complaining of sickness and scorn?
Where is your radiant smile, which gladdened me
and stirred longing through my heart and every part of me?
And where is the spell of lids graced by dark-and-white eyes,
taking hearts captive with a stare or a lowered glance?
She betrayed the pledges of my love, without pity,
and did not soften for the wound in my heart’s dark core.
So Time betrayed her in the fairest of her charms,
and all that had been spell and enticement passed away.
I scarcely know her—no, this is only a specter;
the nights have left of it nothing but wasted remains.
You are not the woman for whom the heart went mad,
nor is yours the passion that defeated my physicians.
Rather, you are a grave that held her corpse, and decay
has walked within it, leaving only traces and fragments.
