1. هندُ عذراءُ أسلمتها المقادير

    لذئبٍ يروغ خبثاً ومكرا

    She was a maiden whom fate

    Delivered to a sly and cunning wolf

  2. عبثُ همه ولهو وقصفٌ

    لا يبالي من الجريمة وزرا

    Whose sole purpose is mischief and folly

    With no regard for the burden of sin

  3. وذئاب الأنام أضرى من الذئب

    وأمضى في الفتك ناباً وظفرا

    Wolves of mankind are worse than the wolf

    More resolute in their vicious attacks

  4. شاقه حسنها فهام بقد

    كقضيب الأراك ما زال نضرا

    Her beauty allured him, so he lusted

    Like an erect spear, still fresh

  5. ومضى ينصب الأحابيل للحسن

    ويبدى الهوى ويكتُمُ شرا

    He set his traps for her beauty

    Professing his love while hiding evil

  6. مدّ اشراكه وحام عليها

    برقب الصيد جاهداً يتحرى

    He spread his nets and swooped down on her

    With the neck of his prey strained in vigilance

  7. مرّ جذلان باسم الثغر

    وضاح المحيا يتيه عجبا وكبرا

    He passed by, feigning a smile

    Dazzling, with wonder and pride

  8. ورأتهُ العذراءُ يرمقها حبا

    فراحت بنظرة منه سكرى

    The maiden saw him gazing at her with love

    And she became drunk from his glance

  9. راعها منه مقلةٌ تنفث السحر

    ووجه يضيء حسنا وبشرى

    His amorous glance enchanted her

    A glowing face promising joy

  10. غرّها ذلك السراب فضلّت

    في صحارى فجوره فهي حيرى

    That mirage seduced her, and she went astray

    In the deserts of his immorality, lost

  11. ورأت في هواه أمنيةَ القلب

    وراحت تنيله الوصل سرا

    In his love she saw her heart's desire

    And she gave herself to him in secret

  12. سعدت لحظة بوصل شقيّ

    أورثتها العناء والحزن دهرا

    For one blissful moment with a wretched man

    That brought her sorrow and grief everlasting

  13. هتكت سترها الرذيلة والغدر

    وكم كاعب تضلّلُ غدرا

    The vileness and treachery stripped her honor

    How many players are led astray by betrayal

  14. بدّلتها الأيامُ بالسعد بؤساً

    وشقاءً وبالهناءة ضرا

    The days exchanged her joy for misery

    And bliss for harm

  15. وجفاها أترابها من عذارى الحي

    إذ قارفت من الأمر نكرا

    Her chaste comrades shunned her

    When she committed this shameful act

  16. فذوى غصنُها الرطيب وكانت

    كقضيب الريحان طيباً ونشرا

    Her fresh branch withered

    Once like a sweet, blooming basil

  17. تلك كانت أحلى من الفجر حسناً

    وكعذارء هيكل القدس طهرا

    She who was lovelier than dawn

    And purer than the virgin of the holy temple

  18. دنّستها الغداة كف زنيم

    ينحر الحسن والفضائل نحرا

    Was defiled by the hand of a vile man

    Who slaughtered beauty and virtues

  19. سلبتها الحياة والأمل الحلو

    فلم تستطع على الذل صبرا

    Life and sweet hope were robbed from her

    As she could not endure the humiliation

  20. سهدت ليلها الطويل تبث

    النجم مرّ الشكاة تكابد جمرا

    She spent her long nights in wakefulness

    As stars passed, enduring embers

  21. وبها ما بها من السقم البادي

    وطيّ الحشا تكابد جمرا

    Bearing her obvious illness

    And the shroud of dust, enduring embers

  22. كلما راجعت صحائف ماضيها

    وعمراً بالعز والطهر مرّا

    Whenever she revisited her past days

    And a life of dignity and purity

  23. ورأت حاضراً تلطّخ بالعار

    وأضحى من الفضيلة صفرا

    And saw the present stained with disgrace

    Virtue emptied and depleted

  24. تتمنى لو يقبض الموت نفساً

    أوردتها موارد الذل غدرا

    She wished death would take her soul

    Or one of the means of her humiliation betray her

  25. كيف تقضي بالسم بالنار

    بالنهر وأي الأسباب ما كان مرا

    How to die by poison, fire

    The river - which way is best?

  26. احرقتها لإثمها ألسُنُ الناس

    ومن في الأنام يقبَلُ عذرا

    The tongues of people burned her for her sin

    Who in mankind would accept her excuse?

  27. ان من تحمل الجريمة سراً

    تلد العار والفضيحة جهرا

    For he who hides his crime secretly

    Begets shame and scandal openly

  28. ودرى الأهل بالفضيحة فاهتاج

    أخوها وهب يطلب ثأرا

    And when her family knew of the scandal, they were enraged

    Her brother arose, seeking vengeance

  29. وانتضى خنجراً يضيء دجى

    الليل سناه ويملأ القلب ذعرا

    He unsheathed a dagger shining in the night’s gloom

    Filling hearts with terror

  30. ومشى ثابت الجنان يذيق الأخت

    في الخدر طعنة منه نكرا

    Resolute, he went to make his sister taste

    In her slumber a reprehensible stab

  31. فأهابت به وقد خيم اليأس

    وأخنى على الشقية صدرا

    She pleaded with him as despair loomed

    And sorrow weighed upon the wretched girl

  32. أي أخي لا تني ومزق جناني

    أنا بالقتل والمنية أحرى

    "My brother, do not deny me and tear my soul

    For death and demise I am more deserving

  33. أنا دنست بالخطيئة عرضي

    أنا لم أبق للفضيلة سترا

    It was I who defiled my honor

    I did not preserve my virtue

  34. رجَفَت كفُه وقد سقط الخنجر

    منها وراح يلهث بهرا

    His hand shook and the dagger fell

    And he panted, stunned

  35. وافاق الحنان في قلبه القاسي

    وفاضت مدامع منه شكرى

    Kindness awakened in his hardened heart

    Tears of gratitude flowed from him

  36. وتولّته نوبةٌ من جنون

    صار يهذي بها كمن علّ خمرا

    Madness seized him

    And he raved as if drunk on wine

  37. ومضى هارباً يقَهقِهُ في الأس

    واق مستهتراً ولم يدر أمرا

    He fled, screaming into the night

    Reckless and unaware

  38. ومضت تلكمُ الشقيةُ للدير

    تنيل الوجود نظرة حيرى

    The wretched girl went to the monastery

    Seeking with bewildered eyes

  39. شيعت عالما قد اصطرع الب

    ؤس به والنعيم كرا وفرا

    Bidding farewell to a world convulsed with misery

    While luxury and comfort passed it by

  40. تنشدُ الأمن والسلام وتبغي

    لبقايا الأحزان في الدير قبرا

    Seeking safety and peace, she desired

    For the remnants of grief a grave in the monastery
