The lute has captivated your heart, and will not
Allow you anything but sorrow and torment.
How can you be pleased by a doll that has discarded
The garments of passion and youth upon it?
The dawn of its life has not shone, though there has shone
On your temples the mark of dye.
Do not blame me for loving her and my madness,
For by God, she is the adornment of the ladies.
I will recite my poetry to the hearing of time
And complain of her estrangement and aloofness.
I do not fear her father's knights,
No, nor his sharp iron sword.
And in my heart there burns the fire of love,
And in my soul remains some of my youth.
