سئمتُ وأمسيتُ رهنَ الفِرا

شِ من جُرمِ قومي ومن مغرمِ

I grew weary and became a hostage of remorse

For the crime of my people and their passion

ومن سفهِ الرأي بعد النهى

وعيبِ الرشادِ ولم يفهمِ

And the foolishness of opinion after warning

And the flaw of guidance that they did not understand

فلو أني قومي أطاعوا الحليمَ

لم يتعدوا ولم يظلمِ

If only my people had obeyed the Forbearing

They would not have transgressed or wronged

ولكن قومي أطاعوا الغُوا

ةَ حتى تعكسَ أهلُ الدمِ

But my people obeyed the foolish

Until the wise were made outcasts

فأودى السفيهُ برأيِ الحل

يمِ وانتشرَ الأمرُ لم يُبرمِ

So the foolish destroyed the wisdom of the Forbearing

And the matter spread, unresolved
