What concerns me, O love, if
The passion died in your heart
Or you had neglected me
In an inattentive moment of yours
Or you thought I was the source
Of your misfortunes in your country
In your depths or your plateau
In your Levant or your Egypt
In your East or your West
In your sea or your river
In your words or your silence
In your night or your morning
I will keep dreaming as long as I live
Of a kiss from your lips
What saddened me, O love, was that
I wasted my life waiting
For your return in your specter
In your poetry or your prose
In your sculpture or your painting
In your sun or your shade
In your cold or your summer
I will keep dreaming as long as I live
Of your return at dawn
How much it pained me, O love, that
I indulged in your land
And forgot my night, then went
To think of your night
Though my night would not have been long
Had it not been for your estrangement
And I cursed a captivity that, without it,
I would have come to your aid
And spent my life excelling
In medicine that heals your wound
I will keep dreaming as long as I live
Of a demise for your sake
What concerned me, O love, that
I named myself your slave
The cross of Jesus or the crescent
On your forehead?
The imams of the house or the
Companions your heart chose?!
It did not concern me whatever you do
For no matter what, I love you
It is said that flowers draw
Their fragrance from your scent
And poetry derives rhythms
From tears of your poetry
And the lute learns melodies
To independently mimic your tune
And cool water drips
From your damp hair
And the soul finds relief in gulps
Poured by your beauty
And the rose awaits daylight
To win your palm
I will keep dreaming as long as I live
Of a rose from your cheek
Do you blame me, O love, that
I turn away from others?!
It was not my fault that I was hit
By a stab from your spear
The spear being your eyes and the wounds
Your wounds in your heart
And the bleeding your bleeding and the blood
Your tears in your eyes
Or was it a stray spear
Or your aimed shot?
Woe to you for shedding blood
When you shot no one but yourself
I wish you had called out before
Heading out to your hunt
I would have avoided you and avoided
Misfortune on your road
I will keep dreaming as long as I live
Of a nap in your embrace
That “when” pains me -
When will you return to your cradle?!
Come and fear not the mountains
For they are your people
Come and fear not the borders
For they are your making
Did you saddle your steed
Or is it your patience holding you back?
Had you known how much my patience
Endured your patience
Had you known how much I dreamed
That I was in your captivity
I will keep dreaming as long as I live
That I am in your house
