وأنْعَمَتْ ايادينا
فأقفرتْ أراضينا
Our hands were blessed,
Yet our lands were made barren.
وأجْهِدَتْ مواشينا
وصارَ نبْعُنا طِينا
Our livestock grew weary,
And our springs turned to mud.
وسُرِّحَتْ خيولٌ كمْ
علتْ بها معالينا
How many horses were let loose,
On which our glory rode.
وأغْفِلَتْ علومٌ كمْ
سَمَتْ بها بوادينا
How much knowledge was neglected,
Which adorned our valleys.
وبُدِّلتْ بجهلٍ صا
ر مُفتيْنا وقاضيْنا
Ignorance replaced the knowledge
Of our jurists and judges.
ومُلّكَتْ عقولٌ قدْ
غدا الغربُ لهَا دينا
Feeble minds were empowered,
The West became their religion.
فأمسيْنا بلا علمٍ
ننادي في نوادينا
We were left with no knowledge,
Crying out in our valleys.
نُعادي منْ يوالينا
نوالي منْ يعَاديْنا
We oppose those who support us,
And support those who oppose us.
فمن غربٍ الى غربٍ
وقد خابتْ مَساعينا
From one West to another,
Our efforts went in vain.
وشُوِّهَتْ مواضينا
فخُنّا لا مُبالينا
Our meadows were disfigured,
We did not care.
وقُزِّمَتْ معانينا
وغُرِّبتْ مرَامينا
Our values were belittled,
Our aspirations were estranged.
وشُيِّدتْ منصّاتٌ
لشنْقِ ما يُؤاخينا
Platforms were built,
To hang what made us kin.
وبثِّ كلّ مكْروهٍ
وافْسادِ أغانينا
To spread every hated thing,
And corrupt our songs.
وإخفاءِ مزايانا
وإبرازِ مساوينا
To hide our beauty,
And expose our flaws.
وما عدْنا نَعي منْ نحْ
نُ أوْ منْ هم اهالينا
We no longer lamented
Our people or our folk.
وجاءوْنا مُنادينا
بحقٍّ أصْلهُ فينا
They came calling us,
With a right that was ours.
فصَدَّقْنا مُضلِّينا
وأمسيْنا مُضلّينا
We believed those who misled us,
And we became the misguided ones.
فبتنا نحنُ والغرْبُ
ليعقوبَ مُطيعينا
We and the West remained
Obedient to Jacob.
وخالفنا تعاليما
فاصبحنا مدانينا
We went against our teachings,
And became the condemned ones.
وأخْسَرْنا موازينا
فامْسينا مَدِينينا
We lost our balances,
And became the indebted ones.
وضيَّعْنا فلسطينا
وما بكتْ مآقينا
We neglected Palestine,
Yet our misfortunes did not weep.
كأنّ العهْرَ فينا منْ
ذُ ازمان يلاغينا
It seems we have been
Ignoble since ancient times.
ولمّا ارسل اللهُ
النبيين مُلبِّينا
And when Allah sent
The prophets calling us,
أبيْنا ثمّ قلْنا ه
ذه ليست امانينا
We refused, then we said,
This is not what we want.
وقاتلْنا وقتَّلنا
فما كنّا مقلّينا
We fought and killed,
Yet we were not tilting.
وما كان سوى قتلٍ
لأجمل معانينا
Nothing but killing
Our most beautiful meanings.
وأفرِغَتْ أراضيْنا
وعُبِّدَتْ بَواقينا
Our lands were emptied,
And our remains were paved over.
وأبرقت مواضينا:
تقبَّلوا تعازينا
Our meadows flashed:
Accept our condolences.
وحارتْ الدنى فينا
فلا طبّ يُداوينا
The world was confused in us,
No medicine could cure us.
ولا شيء يوازينا
سوى جهلٍ يُدانينا
Nothing could equal us
Except the ignorance that brought us low.
فلا أجارنا الله
ولا كنّا مُجارينا
God did not protect us,
Nor were we protected.
