1. إذا ما جاءَ شيطانُ القريضِ

    لكيْ يهديكَ قافيةً ووزْنا

    If the demon of poetry comes

    To guide you to a rhyme and meter

  2. وأنهارًا من الدّمعِ وذكرىْ

    ورتلًا من قواميسٍ ومعْنى

    And rivers of tears and memories

    And a chant of dictionaries and meaning

  3. وصرْحًا من قواريرٍ ولجّا

    وليلًا من أهازيجٍ ومغْنى

    And a palace of flasks and seclusion

    And a night of songs and tunes

  4. وأكوانًا من الوهمِ ومُلْكا

    وأمتعةً وأشْرعةً وسُفْنا

    And universes of illusion and kingdoms

    And riches, sails, and ships

  5. وأقداحًا من النّورِ وثغْرا

    وأطباقًا من السّحرِ وعيْنا

    And goblets of light and a visage

    And plates of magic and an eye

  6. على وجهٍ سماويٍّ لأُنثى

    ترىْ في عينِها يُمناكَ يُمنى

    On a celestial face of a female

    Who sees your right fortune in her right eye

  7. بجفنٍ يرسلُ الألوانَ شتّى

    سبقْتَ الجنَّ لو ميَّزت لوْنا

    With an eyelid that sends all colors

    You surpassed jinn if you distinguished a color

  8. عدا لونِ هوىً يستلُّ سهْما

    من الرّمشِ لقوسٍ فاق جفْنا

    Other than the color of love that draws an arrow

    From the eyelashes of a bow that exceeded an eyelid

  9. عسى ألّا تغالبَهُ وإلّا

    فإنّك بالهزيمةِ سوف تُمْنى

    Maybe he will not defeat you, otherwise

    You will wish for defeat

  10. تصيبُ سهامُهُ الرّوحَ فتعرىْ

    منَ الثّوبِ الّذي أعياك سَجْنا

    His arrows hit the soul and strip

    The garment that tired you, a prison

  11. يمُدُّ إليكَ قوسًا ثمّ نبْلا

    لتصطادَ أتمّ القولِ حُسْنا

    He offers you a bow then arrows

    To hunt the most beautiful words

  12. ليشربَ من معانيكَ ويغْشى

    إذا أطلقتَهُ قلبًا وأُذْنا

    To drink from your meanings and overwhelm

    When you unleash it, a heart and an ear

  13. وجُمهورًا من الأنْجامِ منْ عرْ

    شِكَ المسْكوبِ من نورٍ تدَنَّى

    And crowds of stars from your throne

    Poured from a light that approached

  14. لكيْ يُنسيكَ بالتهْليلِ دُنيا

    إذا أسْمعتَهُ ممّا تسنَّى

    To make you forget the world

    If you hear it from what it dictated

  15. وكم ليلاءَ فيها النّجمُ أغنَى

    عن الإنسانِ أو منْ كانَ جِنَّا

    And how many nights where a star sang

    Other than a human or a jinn

  16. عدا من كانَ منّا إذ تأسَّى

    بمن بأبي فراتٍ قد تكنَّى

    Except one of us when he grieved

    With one called Abu Furat

  17. وقالَ اتْلُ عليهِمْ من قريضٍ

    بهِ الحلْمُ من الأنفاسِ أدْنى

    And said: Recite to them from poetry

    In it, dreams from the breaths are nearer

  18. به الشّركُ أقلُّ الراي حشْدا

    ودينُ اللهِ أعلَى الدّينِ شأْنا

    In it, polytheism is the least in number

    And Allah's religion is supreme in glory

  19. وأرضُ العُربِ خيرُ الأرضِأحنى

    غدا الذئبُ بها للشّاةِ إبْنا

    And the land of Arabs is best bowed

    Tomorrow the wolf becomes a lamb in it

  20. وذو علمٍ أتمُّ النّاسِ حظًّا

    من الدُّنيا بهِ الأوطانُ تُبْنى

    And one of knowledge is best in fortune

    With it countries are built

  21. به لمّا يزلْ قيسُ يُغنِّي

    على أبوابِ ليْلى كيْ تمُنّا

    With it Qays never stopped singing

    At Layla's doors so that she would allow

  22. وهل للعشقِ في دُنياكَ معْنى

    إذا قيسُ بليلىْ ما تغنَّى؟

    And is there meaning for love in your world

    When Qays sang for Layla?

  23. وأنذِرْ كافرًا بالشّعرِ فنّا

    وبشِّرْ مُؤمنًا بالشّعرِ خِدْنا

    And warn a disbeliever with art, vanish

    And give glad tidings to a believer with art, intimacy

  24. وقلْ لهُما بأنّ البيتَ أبْقى

    من الدّنيا الّتي حتمًا ستفْنى

    And tell them both that the verse is more lasting

    Than the life that will definitely perish

  25. فمنْ لانَ لنا قلبًا وغنّى

    جعلنا صدرهُ للشّعر كِنّا

    So whoever softened for us a heart and sang

    We made their chest home to poetry

  26. إذا ما قالَ بيتا نيلَ خُلْدا

    فكانَ لهُ من النّسيانِ حِصْنا

    If one says a verse, gains eternity

    So for him from forgetting is a fortress

  27. ومن لمْ يستجِبْ وازدادَ عِنْدا

    كفاهُ أنّهُ المطْرودُ مِنّا

    And whoever does not respond and increases stubbornness

    It suffices that he is banished from us

  28. وسلْ نجمًا حبيبًا ناءَ فجْرا

    عن النّوءِ وما ألهاهُ عنّا

    And ask a beloved star that spent dawn

    Away from the star cluster and what distracted it from us

  29. وسلْ نجمًا عن الجمعِ توانَى

    عن الشرقِ لمَ الشّرقُ تأنَّى

    And ask a star that hesitated from the east

    Why did the east hesitate?

  30. ولُمْ فجرًا أمِلْنا أن يحنّا

    فكان الليلُ إذْ طالَ أحنّا

    And why did we hope a dawn would soften

    So the night when prolonged was softer

  31. فمنهُ لا تعُذْ باللهِ ظنّا

    بأنّكَ تطردُ الملْعونَ لَعْنا

    Do not blame him by Allah, assume

    That you banish the cursed, curse him

  32. فيرحلُ عنكَ مُحتجًّا بأنّ

    عليْها من يرى الإحسانَ دَيْنا

    So he leaves you disputing that

    One who sees benevolence owes it

  33. وتبكِيْ بعدَها وتئنُّ أنّا

    لفقدِكَ صاحبًا عِشتَ تمنَّى

    And you cry after it and moan that

    You miss a companion you wished for

  34. ومن أوفىْ بوعدِهِ ما أخلّا

    وأعطىْ يومَ ضنَّ الغيرُ ضنَّا

    And the one who fulfilled his promise did not betray

    And gave when others begrudged

  35. فلا مخلوقَ أوفىْ منهُ خلّا

    ولا خلّاقَ أكثرَ منه عوْنا

    So no creature was more loyal than him in betrayal

    And no Creator was more supportive than Him

  36. ملاكٌ هُوْ، بأجنحةٍ وربِّي

    فيا تعسَ الّذي سمّاهُ جِنَّا

    An angel he is, with wings and my Lord

    So woe to those who called him a jinn
