Do not ask me... what my beloved’s name is.

I fear for you—the heady waft of perfumes.

The flask of fragrance—if you shattered it,

you would drown in streaming perfume.

By God... if I disclosed a single letter,

lilacs would heap up along the roads.

    تركته يجـري مع الغـروب

    Do not search for him here within my breast;

I left him to run with the sunset.

You see him in the laughter of the streams,

in the flutter of the playful butterfly,

in the sea, in the breathing of the meadows,

and in the song of every nightingale,

in winter’s tears when it weeps,

and in the bounty of the pouring rain.

Do not ask about his lips... for have

you ever seen the elegance of sunset?

His eyes are two shores of purity,

and his waist is the swaying of a bough.

Beauties no book has ever contained,

nor any writer’s pen laid claim to.

    His magic... his throat... enough!

For I will never divulge my beloved’s name.
