    حفـرته الأيـام والأنـواء؟

    Greetings, greetings.. do you recognize the face

    Carved by days and winds?

  3. أكل الحب من حشاشة قلبي

    والبقايا تقاسمتـها النسـاء

    Love ate the tenderness of my heart

    And the remnants were shared by women

  4. كل أحبابي القدامى نسـوني

    لا نوار تجيـب أو عفـراء

    All my old friends forgot me

    There is no light that responds or blondeness

  5. فالشفـاه المطيبـات رمادٌ

    وخيام الهوى رماها الـهواء

    So the sweet lips are ashes

    And the tents of passion were blown away by the wind

  6. سكن الحزن كالعصافير قلبي

    فالأسى خمرةٌ وقلبي الإنـاء

    Sadness settled like sparrows in my heart

    So sorrow is wine and my heart is the cup

  7. أنا جرحٌ يمشي على قدميه

    وخيـولي قد هدها الإعياء

    I am a wound walking on its feet

    And my horses, exhaustion has defeated them

  8. فجراح الحسين بعض جراحي

    وبصدري من الأسى كربلاء

    Al-Hussein's wounds are some of my wounds

    And in my chest is Karbala's sorrow

  9. وأنا الحزن من زمانٍ صديقي

    وقليـلٌ في عصرنا الأصدقاء

    And I am sadness, for ages my friend

    And few in our time are friends

  10. مرحباً يا عراق،كيف العباءات

    وكيف المها.. وكيف الظباء؟

    Greetings O Iraq, how are the cloaks

    And how are the beautiful gazelles and deer?

  11. مرحباً يا عراق.. هل نسيتني

    بعد طول السنين سامـراء؟

    Greetings O Iraq.. Have you forgotten me

    After long years, Samarra?

  12. مرحباً يا جسور يا نخل يا نهر

    وأهلاً يا عشـب... يا أفياء

    Greetings O bridges, O palms, O river

    And welcome O grass... O meadows

  13. كيف أحبابنا على ضفة النهر

    وكيف البسـاط والنـدماء؟

    How are our loved ones on the river bank

    And how is the carpet and carpets?

  14. كان عندي هـنا أميرة حبٍ

    ثم ضاعت أميرتي الحسـناء

    I had a princess of love here

    Then my beautiful princess was lost

  15. أين وجهٌ في الأعظمية حلوٌ

    لو رأته تغار منه السـماء؟

    Where is the lovely face in Al-A'zamiyah

    If the sky saw it, it would be jealous?

  16. إنني السندباد.. مزقه البحر

    و عـينا حـبيبتي المـيناء

    I am Sinbad.. ripped apart by the sea

    And the eyes of my beloved are the harbor

  17. مضغ الموج مركبي.. وجبيني

    ثقبته العواصـف الهـوجاء

    The wave chewed my ship.. and my forehead

    Pierced by the raging storms

  18. إن في داخلي عصوراً من الحزن

    فهـل لي إلى العـراق التجاء؟

    Inside me are ages of sadness

    Can I take refuge in Iraq?

  19. وأنا العاشـق الكبير.. ولكـن

    ليس تكفي دفاتـري الزرقـاء

    And I am the great lover.. but

    My blue notebooks are not enough

  20. يا حزيران.ما الذي فعل الشعر؟

    وما الذي أعطـى لنا الشعراء؟

    O June.. what has poetry done?

    And what has it given us, the poets?

  21. الدواوين في يدينا طـروحٌ

    والتعـابير كـلها إنـشاء

    The books in our hands are neglected

    And all the expressions are exaggerated

  22. كـل عامٍ نأتي لسوق عكاظٍ

    وعـلينا العمائم الخضـراء

    Every year we come to Souk Okaz

    Wearing our green turbans

  23. ونهز الرؤوس مثل الدراويش

    ...و بالنار تكتـوي سـيناء

    And we shake our heads like dervishes

    ...And Sinai is branded by fire

  24. كـل عامٍ نأتي.. فهذا جريرٌ

    يتغنـى.. وهـذه الخـنساء

    Every year we come.. So here is Jareer

    Reciting.. and here is Al-Khansa'

  25. لم نزل، لم نزل نمصمص قشر

    وفلسطـين خضبتها الـدماء

    We have not stopped sucking the peel

    While Palestine is dyed with blood

  26. يا حزيران.. أنـت أكـبر من

    وأبٌ أنـت مـا لـه أبـناء

    O June.. you are greater than

    And you are a father who has no sons

  27. لـو ملكـنا بقيـةً من إباءٍ

    لانتخـينا.. لكـننا جـبناء

    If we had some paternalism

    We would have chosen.. but we are cowards

  28. يا عصـور المعلـقات مللن

    ومن الجسـم قد يمل الرداء

    O ages of the Mu'allaqat I'm bored

    And the body can be bored of clothing

  29. نصف أشعارنا نقوشٌ ومـاذ

    ينفع النقش حين يهوي البناء؟

    Half of our poetry is carvings and what

    Use are carvings when the building collapses?

  30. المقامات لعبةٌ... والحـريري

    حشيشٌ.. والغول والعـنقاء

    Al-Maqamat are games.. and Al-Hariri

    Is nonsense.. and the ogre and the she-camel

  31. ذبحتنا الفسيفساء عصـور

    والدمى والزخارف البلـهاء

    The mosaic killed us for ages

    And the dolls and the foolish decorations

  32. نرفض الشعر كيمياءً وسحر

    قتلتنا القصيـدة الكيـمياء

    We reject chemistry poetry and magic

    The chemical poem has killed us

  33. نرفض الشعر مسرحاً ملكي

    من كراسيه يحرم البسـطاء

    We reject royal theater poetry

    Where the seats forbid the poor

  34. نرفض الشعر أن يكون حصان

    يمتطـيه الطـغاة والأقـوياء

    We reject poetry to be a horse

    Ridden by tyrants and the powerful

  35. نرفض الشعـر عتمـةً ورموز

    كيف تسطيع أن ترى الظلماء؟

    We reject poetry as darkness and symbols

    How can you see in the dark?

  36. نرفض الشعـر أرنباً خشـبي

    لا طمـوح لـه ولا أهـواء

    We reject poetry as a wooden rabbit

    With no ambitions or passions

  37. نرفض الشعر في قهوة الشعر..

    دخـانٌ أيامـهم.. وارتخـاء

    We reject poetry in the café of poetry..

    Their smoke.. and relaxation

  38. شعرنا اليوم يحفر الشمس حفر

    بيديه.. فكل شـيءٍ مـضاء

    Our poetry today carves sun holes

    With its hands.. so everything is illuminated

  39. شعرنا اليوم هجمةٌ واكتشافٌ

    لا خطوط كوفيـةً ، وحداء

    Our poetry today is an attack and discovery

    No Kufic lines, and isolation

  40. كل شعرٍ معاصرٍ ليـس فيه

    غصب العصر نملةٌ عـرجاء

    No contemporary poetry without

    The rape of the age, a lame ant

  41. ما هو الشعر إن غدا بهلوان

    يتسـلى برقصـه الخـلفاء

    What is poetry if it becomes an acrobat

    Amusing rulers with its dance?

  42. ما هو الشعر.. حين يصبح فأر

    كسـرة الخبز –همه والغذاء

    What is poetry.. when it becomes a mouse

    Whose concerns are crumbs and food?

  43. وإذا أصبـح المفكـر بـوق

    يستوي الفكر عندها والحذاء

    And if the thinker becomes a trumpet

    Thought and shoes become equal then

  44. يصلب الأنبياء من أجل رأيٍ

    فلماذا لا يصلب الشعـراء؟

    Prophets are crucified for an opinion

    So why are poets not crucified?

  45. الفدائي وحده.. يكتب الشعر

    و كـل الذي كتبناه هـراء

    Only the freedom fighter.. writes poetry

    And everything we wrote is nonsense

  46. إنه الكاتـب الحقيقي للعصـر

    ونـحن الحـجاب والأجـراء

    He is the real writer of the age

    And we are the veils and servants

  47. عنـدما تبدأ البنادق بالعـزف

    تمـوت القصـائد العصـماء

    When rifles start playing

    Supreme poems die

  48. ما لنا؟ مالنا نلـوم حـزيران

    و في الإثم كـلنا شـركاء؟

    What do we have? What do we have to blame June

    And in sin, we are all partners?

  49. من هم الأبرياء؟ نحن جميـع

    حامـلو عاره ولا اسـتثناء

    Who are the innocent? All of us

    Bearers of disgrace, no exception

  50. عقلنا، فكرنا، هزال أغانين

    رؤانا، أقوالـنا الجـوفـاء

    Our mind, our thought, the misery of our songs

    Our visions, our hollow words

  51. نثرنا، شعرنا، جرائدنا الصفراء

    والحـبر والحـروف الإمـاء

    Our prose, our poetry, our yellow newspapers

    And the ink, letters are slaves

  52. البطـولات موقفٌ مسرحيٌ

    ووجـوه الممثلـين طـلاء

    Heroism is a theatrical stance

    And the actors' faces are paint

  53. وفلسـطين بينهم كمـزادٍ

    كل شـارٍ يزيد حين يشـاء

    And Palestine between them like an auction

    Every shar' raises whenever he wants

  54. وحدويون! والبلاد شـظاي

    كـل جزءٍ من لحمها أجزاء

    And individualists! And the countries are rubble

    Every piece of its flesh is pieces

  55. ماركسيون! والجماهير تشقى

    فلماذا لا يشبـع الفقـراء؟

    Marxists! And the masses suffer

    So why don't the poor get fed?

  56. قرشيون! لـو رأتهم قريـشٌ

    لاستجارت من رملها البيداء

    Qurashis! If Quraysh saw them

    They would take refuge in their white desert

  57. لا يمـينٌ يجيرنا أو يسـارٌ

    تحت حد السكين نحن سواء

    No right or left that protects us

    Under the knife, we are equal

  58. لو قرأنا التاريخ ما ضاعت القدس

    وضاعت من قبـلها "الحمـراء"..

    Had we read history, Jerusalem would not be lost

    And "Al-Himraa" would not be lost before it..

  59. يا فلسطين، لا تزالين عطـشى

    وعلى الزيت نامت الصحـراء

    O Palestine, you are still thirsty

    And the desert slept on oil

  60. العباءات.. كلها من حريـرٍ

    واللـيالي رخيصـةٌ حمـراء

    The cloaks.. all of silk

    And the nights are cheap, red

  61. يا فلسطين، لا تنادي عليهم

    قد تساوى الأموات والأحياء

    O Palestine, do not call upon them

    The dead and the living have become equal

  62. قتل النفط ما بهم من سجاي

    ولقد يقتـل الثـري الثراء

    Oil has killed what pride they had

    And wealth can kill wealth

  63. يا فلسطين، لا تنادي قريش

    فقريشٌ ماتـت بها الخيـلاء

    O Palestine, do not call on Quraysh

    For Quraysh died with pride

  64. لا تنادي الرجال من عبد شمسٍ

    لا تنادي.. لم يبـق إلا النساء

    Do not call the men of Abd Shams

    Do not call.. only the women remain

  65. ذروة الموت أن تموت المروءات

    ويمشـي إلى الـوراء الـوراء

    The peak of death is when chivalries die

    And backwardness walks backward

  66. مر عامـان والغزاة مقيمـون

    و تاريـخ أمـتي... أشـلاء

    Two years have passed and the invaders reside

    And my nation's history is in pieces

  67. مـر عامان.. والمسيـح أسيرٌ

    في يديهم.. و مـريم العـذراء

    Two years have passed.. and Christ is captive

    In their hands.. and the Virgin Mary

  68. مر عامـان.. والمآذن تبكـي

    و النواقيـس كلها خرسـاء

    Two years have passed.. and the minarets cry

    And all the bells are mute

  69. أيها الراكعون في معبد الحرف

    كـفانا الـدوار والإغـماء

    O you who bow in the temple of the letter

    Enough of the vertigo and fainting

  70. مزقوا جبة الدراويش عـنكم

    واخلعوا الصوف أيها الأتقياء

    Tear off the dervish gown from yourselves

    And take off the Sufi clothes, O pious ones

  71. اتركـوا أولياءنا بسـلامٍ

    أي أرضٍ أعادها الأولياء؟

    Leave our saints in peace

    What land have saints restored?

  72. في فمي يا عراق.. مـاءٌ كـثيرٌ

    كيف يشكو من كان في فيه ماء؟

    In my mouth, O Iraq.. plenty of water

    How can one with water in his mouth complain?

  73. زعموا أنني طـعنت بـلادي

    وأنا الحـب كـله والـوفاء

    They claimed I stabbed my country

    And I am all love and loyalty

  74. أيريدون أن أمـص نـزيفي؟

    لا جـدارٌ أنا و لا ببـغاء!

    Do they want me to suck my bleeding?

    I am no wall, nor a parrot!

  75. أنـا حريتي... فإن سـرقوه

    تسقط الأرض كلها والسماء

    I am my freedom.. so if they steal it

    The whole earth and sky will fall

  76. ما احترفت النفاق يوماً وشعري

    مـا اشتـراه الملـوك والأمراء

    I have never practiced hypocrisy and my poetry

    Has not been bought by kings and princes

  77. كل حرفٍ كتبته كان سـيف

    عـربياً يشـع منه الضـياء

    Every brave letter I wrote

    Was an Arabic sword shining with light

  78. وقليـلٌ من الكـلام نقـيٌ

    وكـثيرٌ من الكـلام بغـاء

    And little honest talk

    And much talk is immoral

  79. كم أعاني مما كتبـت عـذاب

    ويعاني في شـرقنا الشـرفاء

    How much I suffer from what I wrote

    And the honorable suffer in our East

  80. وجع الحرف رائعٌ.. أوتشكو

    للـبسـاتين وردةٌ حمـراء؟

    The pain of the letter is great.. should I complain

    To the gardens, a red rose?

  81. كل من قاتلوا بحرفٍ شجاعٍ

    ثم ماتـوا.. فإنـهم شهداء

    All who fought with brave words

    Then died.. they are martyrs

  82. لا تعاقب يا رب من رجموني

    واعف عنهم لأنـهم جهلاء

    Do not punish, O Lord, those who stoned me

    And forgive them for they know not

  83. إن حبي للأرض حبٌ بصيرٌ

    وهواهم عواطـفٌ عمياء

    My love for the land is insightful

    And their passions are blind

  84. إن أكن قد كويت لحم بلادي

    فمن الكي قد يجـيء الشفاء

    If I burned the flesh of my country

    Then from burning comes healing

  85. من بحار الأسى، وليل اليتامى

    تطلـع الآن زهـرةٌ بيضاء

    From seas of sorrow, and the night of orphans

    A white flower now emerges

  86. ويطل الفداء شمـساً عـلين

    ما عسانا نكون.. لولا الفداء

    And sacrifice emerges as our sun

    What would we be.. without sacrifice?

  87. من جراح المناضلين.. ولدن

    ومن الجرح تولد الكـبرياء

    From the wounds of strugglers.. we were born

    And from the wound, pride is born

  88. قبلهم، لم يكن هـناك قبـلٌ

    ابتداء التاريخ من يوم جاؤوا

    Before them, there was no "before"

    History begins from the day they came

  89. هبطوا فوق أرضـنا أنبياءً

    بعد أن مات عندنا الأنبياء

    They descended upon our land as prophets

    After our prophets had died

  90. أنقذوا ماء وجهنا يوم لاحو

    فأضاءت وجوهنا السوداء

    They saved the water of our faces when they appeared

    So our dark faces lit up

  91. منحونا إلى الحـياة جـواز

    لم تكـن قبلهم لنا أسمـاء

    They gave us a passport to life

    We had no names before them

  92. أصدقاء الحروف لا تعذلوني

    إن تفجرت أيها الأصـدقاء

    O friends of the letters, do not blame me

    If I explode, O friends

  93. إنني أخزن الرعود بصدري

    مثلما يخزن الرعود الشتاء

    I store thunder in my chest

    As winter stores thunder

  94. أنا ما جئت كي أكون خطيب

    فبلادي أضاعـها الخـطباء

    I did not come to be an orator

    For my countries orators lost it

  95. إنني رافضٌ زماني وعصـري

    ومن الـرفض تولد الأشـياء

    I refuse my time and age

    And from refusal things are born

  96. أصدقائي.. حكيت ما ليس يحكى

    و شـفيعي... طـفولتي والنـقاء

    My friends.. I have told what is not told

    And my intercessor is... my childhood and purity

  97. إنني قـادمٌ إليكـم.. وقلـبي

    فـوق كـفي حمامـةٌ بيضـاء

    I am coming to you.. and my heart

    Above my palm is a white dove

  98. إفهموني.. فما أنا غـير طـفلٍ

    فـوق عينيه يسـتحم المـساء

    Understand me.. I am just a child

    Above whose eyes the evening bathes

  99. أنا لا أعرف ازدواجية الفكر

    فنفسـي.. بحـيرةٌ زرقـاء

    I do not know the duality of thought

    My soul.. is a blue lake

  100. لبلادي شعري.. ولست أبالي

    رفصته أم باركتـه السـماء..

    For my country is my poetry.. and I do not care

    Whether the sky approved or kicked it away..
