1. سللن ظباة العيون الكحال

    وصلن بسمر القدود العوال

    The gazelles with kohl-lined eyes arrived,

    Connecting with the prominent moles.

  2. وقد برزن لآل الهوى

    بها وصحن النزال النزال

    They appeared for the kin of passion,

    With determination for the contest - the contest.

  3. كواعب حسن ملكن الحشى

    وصدن اسود الوغا والقتال

    Charm's maidens possessed my heart,

    Repelling the evil of malice and battle.

  4. من كل شمطاء ان أسفرت

    تزري بشمس الضحى والهلال

    Whenever a beauty emerges at dawn,

    Adorned with the sun and crescent moon.

  5. أو خطرت قال غصن النقا

    لله حسبك هذا الدلال

    Or stirs a branch of softness, saying:

    "Enough for you, this coquetry!"

  6. وان رنت صاح كل الورى

    كفاكٍ بالله رشق النبال

    And if she sings, all people cry:

    "God forbid you, cease the arrows!"

  7. في كلهنّ لقيتُ البلا

    وقتلي بهن على كل حال

    In them all, I met affliction,

    And they killed me, in any case.

  8. علقت بعشق سليمى وما

    أورثني العشق الا النكال

    I was infatuated with Salima, and yet

    Love only left me deprivation.

  9. جفتني سليمى ومن بعدها

    عدمت التصبر والاحتمال

    Salima wearied me, and after her

    I lost patience and endurance.

  10. ما مثل حسن سليمى وما مثلي بعت

    بتلك الربوع وطيب الوصال

    None rivals Salima's beauty, and none rivals me,

    In those meadows and the fragrance of union.

  11. وظبية الانس ما بيننا

    تسعى بكاس مدامٍ حلال

    The gazelle of humanity runs between us

    With a cup of halal wine,

  12. تسطو بصارم لحظٍ إذا

    ما صال أتنساك ضرب النصال

    Brandishing a glance like a sword, should

    I forget you, striking with arrows.

  13. وتسلب اللب بريحانةٍ

    مدّت على الخد من حولها الخال

    She steals the heart with a basil plant

    That circled her cheek with moles.

  14. ومبسمٌ سكريّ اللما

    حوى نظيم عقود اللؤال

    A drunken smile, containing

    A string of pearls of poetry.

  15. لم اسلُ تالله عنها سوى

    في مدحُ حّرٍ حميد الخصال

    I asked God for nothing but

    Praising the virtuous praiseworthy traits,

  16. أمين العلوم همامٌ رقى

    بذورة الفضل أوج الكمال

    The trustee of knowledge, the noble Hammam,

    Reached the highest level of perfection.

  17. ندبٌ بفن البديع جلى

    بيان المعالي بدون اختلال

    He called in the art of rhetoric openly,

    Explaining merits flawlessly.

  18. لو شاء اشحن كل الورى

    صحفاً من النظم بالارتجال

    If he wished, he could have filled the world

    With prose and improvised verse.

  19. فاق الاوايل علماً ومن

    بالدهر سار على ذا المثال

    He surpassed the ancients in knowledge, and

    Throughout time walked in this example.

  20. مقام حمصٍ به قد زها

    فهنّه في علا قدر ما نال

    The abode of Homs flourished through him,

    So congratulate it for what it has attained.

  21. وبشّر الدير مذ جاءَ ها يبث

    جوهر حسن المقال

    And give good tidings to the monastery since he came to it

    Disseminating the essence of excellent speech.

  22. جاء بمدح أمير الملا

    شديد العزايم ليث النزال

    He came praising the Prince of the Faith,

    Firm in resolve, lion in combat,

  23. بشير السعادة خير الورى

    شهاب المعالي وبحر النوال

    The happiness of fate, the best of mankind,

    Comet of merits and sea of bounty.

  24. انعم به الله من شاعر

    مهذّب الخلق من خير آل

    God endowed him with a poet

    Well-mannered, from the best family,

  25. ذو الحزم افضل أهل الحجى

    بهيّ الصفات حميد الخصال

    The wisest of the reasonable people,

    Beautiful traits, praiseworthy qualities.

  26. مولاي مذ لاح لي منكم

    بها محاسن تلك الخصال

    My Master, when your virtues appeared to me

    Containing those praiseworthy traits,

  27. أنشدتها فيك تركّيةً

    منظومة الوزن ذات اعتدال

    I recited for you a Turkish verse

    With harmonious, well-balanced meter,

  28. من المتقارب تهدي الثنا

    لبحر علوم رحيب المجال

    Drawing closer through poetry to the sea

    Of vast knowledge and open scope.
