1. قد هبطنا في شاطىء الشعر والفن

    فماذا فيه من الأفراح؟

    We have landed on the shore of poetry and art

    What joys lie here?

  2. ها هو الشاعر الكئيب وحيدا

    تحت سمع الآصال والأصباح

    Under the stars and dawns

    Forever watchful, observing

  3. أبدا ساهم يراقب أيّا

    م حياة لا تنقضي بلواها

    A life that does not end with its misfortunes

    The deluded see only its splendor

  4. لا يرى الواهمون غير ضحاها

    ويعيش الفّنان تحت دجاها

    While the artist lives under its gloom

    He watches the wretched in the darkness of life and weeps for them a foolish weeping

  5. يرقب الأشقياء في ظلمة العيـ

    ـش ويبكي لهم بكاء غبين

    And composes melodies to mourn their afflictions and weep over the sorrowful existence

    Often the sleepless poet remains confused

  6. ويصوغ الألحان يرثى لبلوا

    هم ويبكي على الوجود الحزين

    The darkness brings ease to a poet’s sorrows

    He sees in life only an existence

  7. طالما بات ساهد الطرف حيرا

    ن يسرّ الظلام أحزان شاعر

    Shadowed by the hand of cruel misfortune

    He never sees except the theater of tragedy

  8. لا يرى في الحياة إلا وجودا

    ظلّلته يد الشقاء العاصر

    Between tears and sighs

    And a curtain of gloom appears

  9. أبدا لا يرى سوى مسرح المأ

    ساة بين الدموع والتنهيد

    Every day over a corpse and a newborn

    And depression walks over all forms of existence

  10. وستارا من الدجى يتجلّى

    كلّ يوم عن مّيت ووليد

    Grief, misery and tears visible in every eye

    And an age that deceives the living

  11. واكتئابا يمشي على صور الكو

    ن جميعا ولوعة وشقاء

    Only the sorrowful heart encounters life

    Perplexed by the worries of life

  12. ودموعا تلوح في كل عينيـ

    ـن ودهرا يخادع الأحياء

    Whenever a miserable poet sheds

    The tears of sorrow over tragedy

  13. ليس يلقى الحياة إلا حزين الـ

    ـقلب حيران في هموم الحياة

    And when the ice withers the glory of almond trees

    Profound sorrow flows over it

  14. كلما أنّ بائس ذرف الشا

    عر دمع الأسى على المأساة

    And when the nightingales die of thirst

    The tears of elegy well in his eyelashes

  15. وإذا أذبل الجليد زهو الـ

    ـلوز ران الأسى العميق عليه

    So he is a heart molded from the softness of flowers

    And an eye purified with tears

  16. وإذا ماتت البلابل ظمأى

    جال دمع الرثاء في مقلتيه

    And a sensitive life whose secret

    None knows but the gifted poet

  17. فهو قلب قد صيغ من رقّة الزهـ

    ـر وعين قد طهّرت بالدموع

    It is a thirsty lifetime, squeezed

    Like nerves, passing like misfortune

  18. وحياة حسّاسة ليس يدري

    سرّها غير شاعر مطبوع

    In silence where no sound is heard

    Except the dripping under the nights

  19. هي عمر ظمآن تعصره العُزْ

    لة عصرا, يمرّ كالآزال

    Except the cooing of doves on a desolate mountain

    Or the song of a forsaken nightingale

  20. في سكون لا صوت يسمع فيه

    غير صوت الصرّار تحت الليالي

    And the rustling of trees in the grip of the wind

    And the sound of thunder in the darkness

  21. غير همس الحمام في الجبل المو

    حش أو لحن بلبل مهجور

    Except the whispers of ghosts filling the gloom of the poet

    In his long dreary night

  22. وحفيف الأشجار في قبضة الر

    يح وصوت الرعود في الديجور

    He receives poems from them and lives

    Forever in the fever of sorrow and pallor

  23. غير همس الأشباح ملء دجى الشا

    عر في ليله الطويل الجديب

    O my tortured poet what is it?

    Is this how life is spent miserably?

  24. يتلقّى الأشعار عنها ويحيا

    أبدا في حمى الأسى والشحوب

    You live pale-faced and tired for divine inspiration

    Having sold your days for poetry

  25. أيها الشاعر الذي يسهر الليـ

    ـل وحيدا مستغرقا في الجمود

    And neglected life, heart and eye

    And devoted your youth and love to art

  26. محرقا روحه بخورا على حبّ

    (أبولو) ووحيه المنشود

    To live wounded

    It does not bother you that sorrows accompany you

  27. ساهدا حانيا على القلم الشا

    عر يرثي الدجى ويبكي السنينا

    As long as you are inspired and vocal

    You are not satisfied except with its singing

  28. راسما للحياة صورتها المرّ

    ة بين الجياع والبائسينا

    Even if it is heard as agony and lament

    Life does not give the poet glory

  29. أطفىء الضوء أيّها الشاعر المتـ

    ـعب وارحم فؤادك الموجوعا

    Unless he tastes the worries of deprivation

    Souls cannot rise unless

  30. كاد يخبو ضوء السراج وتأتي

    ظلمات الدجى عليه جميعا

    Purified by the meaning of tears and sighs

    So when sorrow pales the poet’s cheek

  31. رقد العالم المعذّب تحت الـ

    ـليل فارقد واترك بقايا النشيد

    Or he passes a night of anguish

    And when the claw of grief lacerates his heart

  32. حسبك الآن ما سهرت مع الحا

    رس ترثي لليله المكدود

    And his life is straitened by its pain

    Life addresses him: My inspired poet, O son of pallor and pain

  33. قد أوى الحارس الكئيب إلى الكو

    خ إلى غمضة الكرى والطيوف

    The shining stars cannot cast a spell unless the curtain of darkness falls

    And he who gathers flowers tramples thorns, my poet, and walks on them

  34. فكفى يا حزين عطفا على الكو

    ن ورفقا بقلبك الملهوف

    And he who loves nature is not burdened by the silence of gloom

    So endure as much sorrow as you can

  35. عجبا كيف تسهر الشاعر الملـ

    ـهم أحزان من عن الحزن ناموا

    For without sorrows, there would be nothing

    Bury the light in your eyelids, dead,

  36. كيف ترقا مدامع الورد في الحقـ

    ـل ويبكي على أساها الحمام

    And bring poetry to life from your heart

    Sing this torment, describe for people what makes the poet's heart weep

  37. آه يا شاعري المعذّب ماذا؟

    أكذا تصرف الحياة غبينا؟

    Describe for them how he spends his life confused and lives with his crushing sorrow

    Describe that struggle - the struggle of thought and heart - in the darkness of life

  38. في سبيل الوحي السماويّ تحيا

    شاحب الوجه متعبا محزونا

    Whenever luxury conceals the heart’s screams, obstinate thought clamors

    For in his life they are a fountain of sorrows

  39. بعت بالشعر لهو أيّامك الظمأ

    ى وعفت الحياة عينا وقلبا

    That makes life a gloomy horizon

    And they are the two rebels that must

  40. ونذرت الشباب والحبّ للفنّ

    لتحيا على الجراح محبّا

    Make their voices heard, even if in blood and flames

    It is the charter of thought to sing poetry

  41. ليس يعنيك أن ترافقك الأحـ

    ـزان ما دمت ملهما صدّاحا

    Even if it remains sad

    And its aspiration is to rise to the highest world

  42. ليس يرضيك غير تغّنيـ

    ـه وإن صغته أسى ونواحا

    And cast itself on the path to death

    So it is a free horizon that wants life of the mind

  43. ليس تعطي الحياة للشاعر المجـ

    ـد إذا لم يذق هموم الحياة

    Away from feeling

    And it is indifferent whether the poet protests

  44. ليس تسمو الأرواح إن لم تطهّر

    ها معاني الدموع والآهات

    Or misfortunes are cruel to him

    Are not gauntness, pain and misery

  45. فإذا أشحب الأسى وجنة الشا

    عر أو بات ليلة أوّاها

    The source of poetry and melodies?

    Or does life not satisfy the poet

  46. وإذا عضّ قلبه مخلب الحز

    ن وضاقت حياته بأساها

    With melody in deprivation?

    Why then does the heart stir up struggle? Why?

  47. خاطبته الحياة : يا شاعري الملـ

    ـهم يا ابن الشحوب والآلام

    Why is life desolate and thought miserable?

    Thus the minds cry out to the poet at night, so if dawn comes

  48. النجوم الوضاء لا تبعث السحـ

    ـر إذا لم يسدل ستار الظلام

    And he sees the shepherd boy driving thirsty sheep

    The heart will cry where is my love? Where is my joy?

  49. والذي يجمع الزهور يدوس الـ

    الشوك يا شاعري ويمشي عليه

    Why do I remain forever captive?

    I will never sacrifice my joys

  50. والذي يعشق الطبيعة لا يثـ

    ـقل صمت الدجى على مسمعيه

    And live with that miserable broken man

    You compose your poetry from my weeping

  51. فاحتمل ما استطعت أحزان عمر

    هو لولا الأحزان ما كان شيّا

    From me wishes, from me yearning

    From my blood these epics, so have mercy on me

  52. وادفن النور في جفونك ميتا

    وابعث الشعر من فؤادك حّيا

    I am the passionate, wretched, infatuated lover

    Set me free, let me taste the joy of love

  53. غنّ هذا العذاب صف لحياة النـ

    ـاس ماذا يبكي فؤاد الشاعر

    Maybe I can escape this misery

    What is the song of poetry my tired poet?

  54. صف لهم كيف يصرف العمر حيرا

    ن ويحيا على أساه العاصر

    If life is fleeting, the anthem cannot quench your thirst

    Nor a melody slake you

  55. صف لهم ذلك الصراع صراع الـ

    ـفكر والقلب في ظلام الحياة

    Do not say tomorrow I will regret

    What has passed, despair and sorrow

  56. كلّما أخفت النعيم صراخ الـ

    ـقلب ضج الفكرالأبيّ العاتي

    Under the weight of earth and in the solitude of death

    This anthem will fade and perish

  57. فهما في حياته نبع أحزا

    ن يردّ الحياة أفقا كئيبا

    So when your tune you composed in agony and sorrow

    Sings for the gentle

  58. وهما الثائران لا بدّ من صو

    تهما وليكن دما ولهيبا

    And when you who filled the world with beauty die thirsty and bleak

    And earth wears away

  59. شرعة الفكر أن يغرّد بالشعـ

    ـر ويشدو وإن يكن محزونا

    What remains of you, flesh and bone

    Then what? Tomorrow they will say

  60. ومناه السموّ للعالم الأعـ

    ـلى وأن يلق في الطريق المنونا

    There was once a youth among us, whom wasting took

    We saw nothing of him but a ghost of a human

  61. فهو أفق حرّ يريد حياة الـ

    ـعقل في معزل عن الإحساس

    We lost, chosen by fate

    They will say a poet whose glory

  62. وسواء لديه أن يشجب الشا

    عر أو أن تقسو عليه المآسي

    Faded and lived lonely

    Forever watching space, catching stars

  63. أفليس الشحوب والألم العا

    صر نبعا للشعر والألحان

    Or harvesting the dreary darkness

    Eyeing flowers from afar, with the dreams of a passionate inamorato in his eyes

  64. أو لا تقنع الحياة من الشا

    عر باللحن في حمى الحرمان؟

    Still, content with the excuse of his love

    Satisfied with scents and colors

  65. فيم كان الصراع يبعثه القلـ

    ـب إذن فيم؟ فيم لا يطمئن

    You lonely poet, enough solitude in our life and sullenness

    It is enough now that you have surrendered to the voice of reason

  66. فيم يأبى الحياة في وحشة العز

    لة والفكر فيم يمضي يئن؟

    Have mercy on your deprived youth

    And the day passes while the miserable poet

  67. هكذا تصرخ الخواطر بالشا

    عر في ليله, فإن جاء فجر

    Is confused between the jaws of his pain

    Between the whispers of the two voices he lives gloomily

  68. ورأى الراعي الصبيّ يسوق الـ

    ـغنم الظامئات لم يبق شعر

    Conversing with his specters and calling them

    So if his heart swells with feelings of despair

  69. ومضى القلب صارخا أين حّبي؟

    أين لهوي؟ وفيم أبقى أسيرا

    He unleashes his sorrows in poetry

    Taking refuge in shepherds to whom he unloads

  70. أبدا لا أني أضحّي بأفرا

    حي، وأحيا ذاك الحزين الكسيرا

    What he suffers of great agony

    Pouring his soul into every line, sighing

  71. من بكائي تصوغ شعرك للكو

    ن ومنّي المنى ومنّي الحنين

    From his heart the melodies

    Pleased with gauntness and illness out of love

  72. من دمي هذه الملاحم فارحمـ

    ـني أنا العاشق الشجي المغبون

    For Apollo, enduring what has passed

    Every verse of his poetry costs him

  73. انطلق بي دعني أذق فرحة الحبّ

    لعلي من الشقاء أفرّ

    Emaciation, shivering, and sickness

    For in his tune he melts his youth

  74. ما غناء الأشعار يا شاعري المتـ

    ـعب إن كانت الحياة تمرّ؟

    And wastes his prime and dreams

    Then what? Soon the storm will roar

  75. ليس يغني عنك النشيد إذا متّ

    حزينا وليس يرويك لحن

    And the beautiful flower will fade

    And the light on high will fade

  76. لا تقل في غدٍ غدٌ ندم قا

    س على ما مضى ويأس وحزن

    And the shining star will plummet

    And radiance will disappear into a grave’s night

  77. تحت ثقل الثرى وفي وحشة المو

    ت سيخبو هذا النشيد ويفنى

    Where only rain will weep

    And none will mourn him except those who loved his youth

  78. فإذا لحنك الذي صغته يأ

    سا وحزنا للناعمين يغّني

    And remnants of lyres and poems

    That poet who used to live

  79. وسَتُنْسَى أنت الذي ملأ الدنـ

    ـيا جمالا ومات ظمآن جهما

    Weeping for every weeping soul

    That noble sympathetic to sorrows

  80. وسيبلى التراب ما يتبّقى

    منك يا مستطار لحما وعظما

    Cast onto thorns

    The days have abandoned him in his deserted grave

  81. ثم ماذا ؟ غدا يقولون قد كا

    ن فتى بيننا طواه الهزال؟

    Under winds and darkness

    Where no sighs a heart emits

  82. ما رأينا منه سوى طيف إنسا

    ن فقدناه واصطفاه الخيال

    Nor tears for tragedy

    Thus the life of the inspired, delicate poet passes in torment and is forgotten

  83. سيقولون شاعر ركبته

    لوثة فانزوى وعاش غريبا

    Thus he fills existence with beauty

    And tastes anguish, cup after cup

  84. أبدا يرقب الفضاء يصيد النـ

    ـجم أو يحصد الظلام الكئيبا

    So sail away my ship from the world of poets

    And leave them to that intense yearning between sighs and afflictions

  85. يرمق الزهر من بعيد وفي عيـ

    ـنيه أحلام عاشق ولهان

    And sail the sea of life as we used to

    And cast anchor on every coast

  86. جامدا قانعا بعذريّ حبّ

    يكتفي بالعطور والألوان

    Maybe O ship we will find radiance

    Shining after the deadly darkness

  87. أيها الشاعر السجين كفانا

    غربة في حياتنا ووجوما

  88. حسبك الآن ما خضعت لصوت

    العقل وارحم شبابك المحروما

  89. ويمرّ النهار والشاعر المغـ

    ـبون حيران بين فكّي أساه

  90. بين همس الصوتين يحيا كئيبا

    ويناجي طيوفه ومناه

  91. فإذا جاش قلبه بمعاني الـ

    ـيأس ألقى أحزانه في النشيد

  92. لائذا باليراع يسكب فيه

    ما يعاني من العذاب الشديد

  93. ساكبا روحه على كل بيت

    ناحتا من فؤاده الألحانا

  94. راضيا بالشحوب والسقم حبا

    لأبولو مستسهلا ما كانا

  95. كلّ بيت من شعره يتقاضا

    ه شحوبا ورعشة وسقاما

  96. فهو في لحنه يذيب صباه

    ويضيع الشباب والأحلاما

  97. ثم ماذا؟ سرعان ما يزأر الإعـ

    ـصار, والزهرة الجميلة تذوي

  98. وإذا الضوء في الأعاليّ يخبو

    وإذا النجمة الوضيئة تهوي

  99. ويغيب الضياء في ليل قبر

    ليس تبكي له سوى الأمطار

  100. ليس يرثيه غير ذاوي صباه

    وبقايا القيثار والأشعار

  101. ذلك الشاعر الذي كان يحيا

    عمره باكيا على كلّ باك

  102. ذلك العاطف النبيل على الأحـ

    ـزان ذاك الملقى على الأشواك

  103. نبذته الأيام في قبره المو

    حش تحت الرياح والظلمات

  104. حيث لا آهة يصعّدها قلـ

    ـب ولا دمعة على المأساة

  105. هكذا في العذاب تمضي حياة الشـ

    ـاعر الملهم الرقيق وتنسى

  106. هكذا يملأ الوجود جمالا

    ويذوق الآلام كأسا فكأسا

  107. هكذا كلّ شاعر فارحلي بي

    يا سفيني عن عالم الشعراء

  108. ولندعهم في ذلك الشجن العا

    صف بين الآهات والأدواء

  109. ولنسر في بحر الحياة كما كنّـ

    ـا ونلقي المرسى على كل ساحل

  110. ربما يا سفين نلقى ضياء

    يتجلّى بعد الظلام القاتل
