    Spare us this talk about your children

  4. صف مناهم وبشرهم وأساهم

    صف لنا ما اختفى وراء صفائك

    Describe their softness and give them good news

    Describe what is hidden behind your purity

  5. صف لنا كيف يعصر العاشق الشو

    ق إلى من ينام عن بلواه

    Describe how the lover squeezes out

    His longing for the one asleep to his misery

  6. كيف يلهو به الخيال فيمضي الـ

    ـليل سهران غارقا في مناه

    How fantasy plays with him and the night passes

  7. صف حياة الذي استبدّ به الحب

    فخال الحياة جّنة سحر

    Describe the life of one possessed by love

    So life seems to him a magical garden

  8. ومضى فاتحا ذراعيه للنو

    ر يصوغ الحياة ديوان شعر

    And he goes with open arms to the light

    Composing life into a book of poetry

  9. يلثم الزهر في الحقول ويشدو

    لليالي الحصاد لحن هواه

    He kisses the flowers in the fields and sings

    Songs of love to the harvest nights

  10. راقصا كالفراش للقمر الحلـ

    ـو خليا من يأسه وأساه

    Dancing like a moth to the sweet moon

    Free from despair and sorrow

  11. راسما للغد الجميل من الأحـ

    ـلام ما لا تطيقه الأقدار

    Painting from his dreams a beautiful tomorrow

    That fate cannot withstand

  12. سادرا في أوهامه غير دار

    أن هذي الحياة هول ونار

    Wandering in his fantasies, unaware

    That this life is horror and fire

  13. في يديه كأس الرحيق يغنيـ

    ـه على مسمع النهار ويشرب

    In his hands a cup of wine he sings to

    Making the day listen and drink

  14. وعلى ثغره ابتسامة مخدو

    ع يغّني له الشقاء فيطرب

    And on his lips a soft smile

    That makes misery sing to him happily

  15. ثم يخبو الضياء ذات مساء

    ويفيق النشوان بالأوهام

    Then the light fades one evening

    And the drunk awakens from his reverie

  16. فإذا الحقل ذابل لا زهور

    لا فراش لا شيء غير الظلام

    So the field is withered, no flowers

    No moths, nothing but darkness

  17. أين تلك الأحلام؟ كيف ذوى الحب؟

    وأين الوجه الحبيب النضير

    Where are those dreams? How did love fade?

    And where is the beloved peer?

  18. يا لغدر الأيام لم تحفظ العهـ

    ـد لقلب جنى عليه الشعور

    Oh the betrayal of days that did not keep

    Promise to a heart that reaped feeling

  19. وتمرّ الحياة والعاشق المهـ

    ـجور قلب دام ووجه شاحب

    And life passes as the suffering lover's

    Heart bleeds and face grows pale

  20. أبدا يرجع الخيال إلى الما

    ضي ويبكي على الغرام الذاهب

    Never does the imagination return

    To the past, crying over lost love

  21. أبدا يرمق الحياة كئيبا

    من وراء الدموع والأحزان

    Never does he gaze sadly at life

    Beyond tears and sorrows

  22. ويراها الذئب الذي ينهش القلـ

    ـب ويقسو على الأسى الإنساني

    And see it as the wolf that tears at his heart

    And man's humanity is cruel to sorrow

  23. أبدا يسأل الظلام حزينا

    شارد الفكر أين ألحان قلبي

    Never does he ask the gloomy darkness

    His wandering mind, where are the tunes of my heart?

  24. أين زهري وأين بلبلي المنـ

    ـشود؟ ماذا أضاع أحلام حبّي؟

    Where are my flowers and nightingale?

    What did my love dreams lose?

  25. أين تلك التي سكبت عليها

    من حياتي ومن فؤادي ولحني

    Where is she on whom I poured

    My life, my heart, my melody?

  26. أين تلك العيون تلهم أحلا

    مي وتمحو غشاوة الحزن عنّي؟

    Where are those eyes that inspire my dreams

    And erase the gloom from me?

  27. يا لقلب المسكين تلذعه الذكـ

    ـرى وتحيي غرامه وأساه

    Oh how memory wounds the poor heart

    And revives his love and pain

  28. هكذا قد قضى عليه كيوبيـ

    ـد فماذا تفيده شكواه؟

    Thus has absence vanquished him

    Of what use are his complaints?

  29. فليجد في الخيال والشعر والذكـ

    ـرى دواء لحبّه المصدوم

    So let him find in imagination, poetry, and memory

    A cure for his battered love

  30. وليقضّ الحياة بين حقول الـ

    ـقمح والقطن تحت ضوء النجوم

    And let him live life in the fields of wheat and cotton

    Under the glow of stars

  31. وليحبّ الغيوم والفجر والنهـ

    ـر ويمضي الأيّام بين التلال

    Let him love the clouds, dawn, and day

    And pass his days between hills

  32. يتغنّى فيعشق الزهر موسيـ

    ـقاه عند الهوى وفوق الجبال

    Singing, so he loves the music

    Of flowers in love and over mountains

  33. فحياة الخيال أجمل من وا

    قع حب ملفّع بالرماد

    For fantasy life is more beautiful than the reality

    Of love marred with ashes

  34. وهنا يا مصدوم حرّية الرو

    ح فماذا يغريك بالأصفاد

    What tempts you to shackles?

    Ask Cupid about the misery of his captives

  35. سل كيوبيد عن شقاوة صرعا

    ه وماذا يلقون من تعذيب

    And the torture they undergo

    How they live in hellish doubt

  36. كيف يحيون في جحيم من الشكّ

    وليل من الضنى والشحوب

    And night of deprivation and gloom

    If their days pass deprived

  37. إن قضت بالحرمان أيّامهم عا

    شوا حزانى معذبين حيارى

    They live suffering, tortured, confused

    Complaining of fate and advancing time

  38. يشتكون الأقدار والزمن العا

    تي ويحيون أشقياء أسارى

    Living unhappiest prisoners

    And if the painful dream comes true

  39. وإذا ما تحقق الحلم العذ

    ب أشاحوا عن سحره كارهينا

    They turn from its magic hating it

    And the light returns pitch black

  40. ويعود الضياء ليلا دجّيا

    وتعود الأزهار شوكا وطينا

    The flowers revert to thorns and mud

    So love fades and the flame of love, desire and longing die out

  41. هكذا يخمد الغرام وتخبو

    شعلة الحب والمنى والحنين

    Happy is he who buries love and lives free, not confined

    O tears of lovers, the world has had enough misery

  42. فالسعيد السعيد من دفن الحبّ

    وعاش الحياة غير سجين

    So do not increase its sorrow

    We have filled the beautiful universe with tears

  43. يا دموع العشّاق قد شبع العا

    لم بؤسا فلا تزيدي أساه

    And had our fill of its silence and darkness

    So dry up, enough of the heartache of living

  44. قد ملأنا الكون الجميل دموعا

    وشبعنا من صمته ودجاه

    And life's torment and days

    Enough the tears on this gloomy earth

  45. فانضبي أنت حسبنا شجن العيـ

    ـش وبلوى الحياة والأيام

    Of the hungry and orphans

    Dry up and banish Cupid's fantasy

  46. حسب هذي الأرض الكئيبة دمع الـ

    ـبائسين الجياع والأيتام

    And enough victims for love

    Lovers will never attain but tears of love

  47. انضبي واطردي خيال كيويبـ

    ـد وحسب الغرام هذي الضحايا

    Whose years are shrouded by death

  48. لن ينال العشّاق يوما سوى أد

    مع حبّ حفّت سناه المنايا
