    سي بآهاتنا وتسخر منا

    The cruel elements of time mock

    Our sighs and scoff at us

  3. في غموض الحياة نسرب كالأشـ

    ـباح بين البكاء والآهات

    In the obscurity of life we creep like ghosts

    Between weeping and sighs

  4. كلّ يوم طفل جديد وميت

    ودموع تبكي على المآساة

    Each day a new child, each day a dead one

    And tears crying over the tragedy

  5. ثم ماذا ؟ في أيّ عالمنا المحـ

    ـزن نلقى العزاء عمّا نقاسي؟

    Then what? In which of our sorrowful worlds

    Can we find solace for our suffering?

  6. عند وجه الطبيعة الجهم أم عنـ

    ـد فؤاد الزمان وهو القاسي

    In the face of pitiless nature or

    In the heart of time, which is cruel

  7. قد عبرنا نهر الحياة حيارى

    في ظلام الفصول والسنوات

    We have crossed the river of life, confused,

    In the darkness of seasons and years

  8. وثبتنا على أسانا خريفا

    وربيعا فما جمال الحياة ؟

    And we have stood on our misery, autumn

    And spring, so what is the beauty of life?

  9. طالما مرّ بي الخريف فأصغيـ

    ـت لصوت القمريّة المحزون

    Often autumn has passed me and I listened

    To the mournful voice of the dove

  10. وأنا في سكون غرفتي الدجـ

    ـياء أرنو إلى وجوم الغصون

    And I, in the stillness of my gloomy room

    Yearn for the stars of the branches

  11. طالما في الخريف سرت إلى الحقـ

    ـل وأمعنت في وجومي وحزني

    Often in autumn I walked to the orchards

    And lingered in my sorrows and gloom

  12. كيف لا والكآبة المرّة الخر

    ساء قد رفرفت على كل غصن

    How could I not when bitter melancholy

    Had fluttered upon every branch?

  13. والحمام الجميل قد هجر الأعـ

    ـشاش سأمان من وجوم السهوب

    The beautiful pigeons had abandoned

    The nests, weary of the gloom of the plains

  14. وطيور الكنار آثرت الهجـ

    ـرة والعيش في حقول الجنوب

    And the partridges chose emigration

    And living in the fields of the south

  15. وغصون الشجار مصفرّة الأو

    راق والزهر ذابل مكفهرّ

    The branches of the trees yellowed

    And the flowers withered and faded

  16. ورياح الخريف تعبث بالأو

    راق والسحب في الفضاء تمرّ

    And the winds of autumn played with the leaves

    While the clouds passed in the sky

  17. طالما سرت في المساء وفي سمـ

    ـعي صوت الأوراق تحت خطايا

    Often I walked in the evening, and in my ear

    Was the sound of leaves beneath my steps

  18. كلما سرت خطوة أنّت الأو

    راق فاستجمعت بعيد أسايا

    With every step, the leaves whispered

    So I collected my thoughts far away

  19. أرمق الحقل والجداول قد جفـ

    ـت ولون الفضاء أسود غائم

    I looked upon the barren fields and streams

    While the sky was gloomy and dark

  20. وأحسّ البوم الكئيب يغنّي

    من بعيد بين النخيل الواجم

    And I felt the sad owl singing

    From afar between the towering palms

  21. وأرى النهر من بعيد كسرّ

    غلّفته أيدي الخريف الكئيب

    And I saw the distant river, which

    Autumn's miserable hands had clothed

  22. لا رعاة على شواطئه يز

    جون أغنامهم قبيل الغروب

    No shepherds on its banks

    Herding their sheep at sunset

  23. لا اخضرار يغري الحزانى بأن يسـ

    ـعوا إليه ولا صفاء جميل

    No greenery tempting the grieved to

    Seek it, no beautiful serenity

  24. ليس إلا رطوبة الأرض والوحـ

    ـشة والصمت والربى والنخيل

    Nothing but the moist earth, desolation

    Silence, ruins, and palm trees

  25. فإذا رعشة تضمُّ فؤادي

    وإذا الروح ضائق بأساه

    Then a shiver takes hold of my heart

    And my soul is choked with sorrow

  26. ما أمرّ الخريف يا رب ما أو

    حش أصباحه وأقسى مساه

    How bitter is autumn, O Lord, how desolate

    Its mornings and cruel its evenings

  27. ثم يأتي الشتاء بالثلج والأمـ

    ـطار والريح في سكون الليالي

    Then comes winter with snow and rain

    And wind in the stillness of nights

  28. وتمرّ الأيام موحشة الخطـ

    ــو بطاء الصباح والآصال

    The days pass bleak and slow

    Mornings and evenings dragging on

  29. وتموت الأزهار في قبضة الثلـ

    ـج ويعرو الأشجار لون الزوال

    Flowers die in the grip of snow

    And trees bare the hue of decay

  30. وتغيب الأطيار في الموقد المهـ

    ـجور أو في كهف وراء الجبال

    Birds disappear into the blazing hearth

    Or a cave behind the mountains

  31. ويجيء المساء بالمطر المنـ

    ـهلّ يبكي على شجا الإنسان

    And evening brings the pouring rain

    That weeps for human misery

  32. وتظلّ الرياح تعصف بالنخـ

    ـل وترثي لكل قلب عان

    While the winds keep shaking the palms

    And grieving every suffering heart

  33. آه ما أكأب الشتاء لياليـ

    ـه وأيامه وما أقساه

    Oh how gloomy are the nights of winter

    Its days and how harsh they are

  34. حين أخلو لنار موقدي الخامـ

    ـد والقلب مغرق في أساه

    When I seclude myself by the dying embers

    With a heart drowning in its sorrow

  35. لست أصغي إلا إلى ضجة الإعـ

    ـصار بين النخيل والصفصاف

    I hear nothing but the howling storm

    Between the palms and poplars

  36. واصطفاق الأمواج في شاطيء النهـ

    ـر ووقع الأمطار فوق الضفاف

    And the crashing of waves on the riverbank

    And the patter of rain over the shore

  37. كل شيء في الكون حولي كئيب

    في ليالي الشتاء ذات الرعود

    Everything around me in the universe

    Is gloomy on the stormy winter nights

  38. كل شيء حولي سوى ساعتي الصمّـ

    ـاء في صمت غرفتي المعهود

    Everything around me except for my deaf

    Clock in the silence of my familiar room

  39. ايه يا ساعتي الكئيبة يا من

    صحبتني في فرحتي وشقائي

    Oh my mournful clock, o you who

    Have accompanied me in joy and misery

  40. ما الذي تبعثين في نفسي الحيـ

    ـرى من الحزن في ليالي الشتاء

    What is it you instill in my puzzled soul

    Of sorrow on winter nights?

  41. أبدا تخفقين في معصمي البا

    رد والليل مظلم ممدود

    You never cease throbbing on my numb wrist

    While the night is dark and stretched

  42. لحظات تمرّ في ثقل السا

    ع وليل معذب منكود

    Moments pass heavily marked

    By your ticks in agonized night

  43. كم سهرت المساء أصغي إلى دقـ

    ـاتك الحائرات في مسمعيا

    How often I stayed up listening

    To your confused ticks assaulting my ear

  44. أنت يا من أحصيت ساعات أيّا

    مي وكنت الرسول منها إليّا

    You, who counted the hours of my days

    And were their messenger to me

  45. رحمة في الشتاء بي لا تعدّي

    ما تبقّى يا ساعتي من حياتي

    Have mercy on me in winter, do not count

    What remains of my life, my clock

  46. واتركيني أصغي إلى نغم الأمـ

    ـطار فوق الحقول والربوات

    And leave me to listen to the melody

    Of rain over the fields and prairies

  47. اتركيني فنغمة المطر الها

    مر أحلى من صوتك الجّبار

    Leave me, for the melody of rain

    Is sweeter than your overpowering voice

  48. يا رسول القضاء والزمن المفـ

    ـني وصوت الأحداث والأقدار

    O messenger of fate and vanishing time

    And voice of events and destinies

  49. اتركيني وحدي وإن كان ليلي

    مكفهرا تحت البروق طويلا

    Leave me alone even if my night is

    Gloomy under the prolonged lightning

  50. اتركيني أصغي إلى الرعد والأمـ

    ـطار يا ساعتي وكّفي العويلا

    Leave me to listen to thunder and rain

    My clock, and cease your wailing

  51. وغدا يقبل الربيع فيحلو

    عقرباك المحّببان لعيني

    And tomorrow spring will arrive, making

    Your two beloved hands sweet to my eye

  52. وتعود الدقّات منك نشيدا

    اتغنّى به ويصدح فنّي

    And your ticks will become a song

    That I sing and my art echoes

  53. الربيع الجميل فصل الطيور الـ

    ـبيض والزهر والسّنا والعطور

    Beautiful spring, season of white birds

    And flowers and brilliance and fragrance

  54. عندما تكتسي العرائش بالكر

    م وتشدو طيورها في البكور

    When nests are clothed in vines

    And birds sing at dawn

  55. عندما يخرج الرعاة إلى الوا

    دي بأغنامهم وتزهو الضفاف

    When shepherds take their sheep

    To pasture and riverbanks bloom

  56. عندما يزهر البنفسج والخبّـ

    ـاز والبرتقال والصفصاف

    When violets, daffodils, oranges blossom

    And poplars and willows

  57. وتذوب الثلوج في القمم العلـ

    ـيا فتجري السيول في كل واد

    When snow melts on the high peaks

    And floods stream down every valley

  58. ويعود البطّ الجميل إلى الشا

    طىء بين الأعشاب والأوراد

    And the beautiful duck returns to the shore

    Among the grass and flowers

  59. ويعود الفلاّح يخرج للحقـ

    ـل طروب الفؤاد كلّ صباح

    When the farmer goes out to the fields

    With a joyful heart every morning

  60. تحت شمس الربيع يسقي جذور الـ

    ـتين والبرتقال والتفّاح

    Under the spring sun he waters the roots

    Of fig, orange, and apple trees

  61. وتعود الطيور للوطن المهـ

    ـجور جذلى مفتونة بالربيع

    And birds return to their abandoned

    Homeland, fascinated by spring

  62. في ثنايا الأغصان تتخذ الأعـ

    ـشاش تحت النور النقيّ البديع

    In the branches they make nests

    Under the bright, pure light

  63. والقماريّ تستحمّ وتلهو

    بين زهر الخّباز فوق الضفاف

    The dove bathes and plays

    Among the daffodils over the shore

  64. وتغنّي للنهر أعذب ألحا

    ن الأماني في مسمع الصفصاف

    And sings the river its sweetest songs

    In the hearing of the poplars

  65. وزهور السفوح تضحك للنحـ

    ـل وتحني رؤوسها للنسيم

    And hillside flowers smile at the palms

    And bow their heads to the breeze

  66. وقطيع الأغنام يمرح والرا

    عي يُقَضّي النهار تحت الكروم

    While sheep frolic and the shepherd

    Spends the day under the vineyards

  67. وصبايا القرى يرحن ويغدو

    ن نشاوى على ضفاف السواقي

    And village maidens stroll and wander

    Happily on the banks of brooks

  68. منشدات أحلامهنّ على سمـ

    ـع الينابيع والورود الرقاق

    Singing their dreams to the murmur

    Of springs and thin flowers

  69. وسماء الحياة تزخر بالوجـ

    ـي ويصحو الشعور والأحلام

    And the sky of life overflows with love

    As feelings and dreams awaken

  70. أي أدونيس آه لو عشت في الأر

    ض فعاش السّنا ومات الظلام

    Oh Adonis, if only I lived on earth

    Where brilliance lived and darkness died

  71. آه لو لم يكن مقامك في عا

    لمنا المكفهرّ حلما قصيرا

    Oh, if only your dwelling weren't

    In our gloomy world, a fleeting dream

  72. آه لو دمت يا أدونيس للأر

    ض وأبقيت عطرك المسحورا

    Oh, if only you lasted, Adonis, on earth

    And left your magical scent

  73. يا ضياع الأحلام في مسمع المو

    ت وماذا تفيدنا الأحلام

    Oh loss of dreams in the hearing of death

    What good are dreams to us?

  74. ليس يبقى الربيع إلا قليلا

    ثم يخبو الجمال والأوهام

    Spring remains but a little while

    Then beauty and dreams fade away

  75. مثل زهر الصحراء سرعان ما تقـ

    ـتله الشمس والرياح الهوج

    Like desert flowers, soon killed

    By sun and raging winds

  76. وتعود الواحات قفرا كما كا

    نت ويذوي العشب النضير البهيج

    And oases return to barrenness

    As they were, and vivid fresh grass withers

  77. هكذا يرحل الربيع سريعا

    وتعود الحياة للأحزان

    So spring departs quickly

    And life returns to sorrows

  78. وتموت الآمال في كل قلب

    وتعيش النفوس للحرمان

    And hopes die in every heart

    And souls live in deprivation

  79. فكأنّ الحياة لم تبتسم إلاّ

    لتلقي سوادها في رؤانا

    So it's as if life never smiled

    Except to cast its gloom over our eyes

  80. وكأن الزهور لم تنشر الأشـ

    ـذاء إلا لكي تثير أسانا

    As if flowers never spread their fragrance

    Except to stir our misery

  81. وكأن النضارة الحلوة الجذ

    لى حُدَاء بنا لصمت القبور

    And as if the lovely vitality

    Were an illusion meant for the silence of graves

  82. وكأن الطيور ترسل لحن الـ

    ـموت في سمع كلّ حيّ غرير

    And birds sent the song of death

    To every chirping soul

  83. يا شباب الحياة ما أنت بالخا

    لد إلا خلود زهر الربيع

    O youth of life, you are not immortal

    Only the immortality of spring flowers

  84. ليس تبقي على نضارتك الأقـ

    ـدار في حومة الأسى والدموع

    The fates do not let your vitality last

    In the ardour of sorrow and tears

  85. أسفا يا ربيع يا ورد يا عطـ

    ـر أهذا ختام كلّ جمال

    Alas, spring, o rose, o perfume

    Is this the end of all beauty?

  86. أكذا يخفت الضياء ويبقى الصـ

    ـمت والحزن في سكون الليالي

    Does radiance thus fade away, leaving

    Silence and sorrow in the stillness of night?

  87. قصّة الحب والجمال أهذا

    ما إليه تكون بعد صباها ؟

    Is this, o love and beauty,

    What you come to after your prime?

  88. تتصدّى لها يد الزمن الما

    حي فتبلى ضياءها وصداها

    Destroyed by the hand of fleeting time

    Until brilliance and reverberation expire

  89. هكذا يا ربيع يختتم النسـ

    ـيان والصمت كلّ شيء جميل

    Thus, spring, oblivion and silence

    End all that is beautiful

  90. ويعيش الإنسان تعصره الذكـ

    ـرى ويبكي على أساه الطويل

    And man lives, squeezed by memories

    And weeps over his prolonged sorrow

  91. فغذا عضّت الكآبة قلبي

    في أضاحي الربيع واشتدّ حزني

    When melancholy bites my heart

    In spring's meadows, and my grief grows

  92. فعلى مصرع الفراشات أبكي

    وذبول الوادي الشجير الأغنّ

    I weep over the death of butterflies

    And the valley's withering greenery

  93. يا معاني الزوال والعدم الرا

    ئع رحماك وارفقي بصبايا

    O meanings of decline and sublime nothingness

    Have mercy and be gentle with my youth

  94. لا تطلّي عليّ من كلّ شيء

    في وجودي فقد سئمت أسايا

    Do not reveal to me from everything

    In my existence that I'm weary of my sorrow

  95. أتركيني أر الربيع طيورا

    ليس ينوي لها الأذى مغتال

    Leave me to see spring birds

    With no intent of harming them

  96. ولتكن زهرة البنفسج في عيـ

    ـني خلودا لا يعتريه زوال

    And let the violet in my eye be

    Immortality without decline

  97. ودعيني أعش مع الذكريات الـ

    ـبيض في أمسي الجميل الراحل

    And let me live with white memories

    In my beautiful, departed evening

  98. علّ هذا يجلو أسى الصيف عن قلـ

    ـبي ويحيي موات حلمي الذابل

    Perhaps this will dispel the sorrow of summer

    From my heart and revive my withered dream

  99. فلقد جّفت الرياض الجميلا

    ت فلا زهرة ولا أشذاء

    For the beautiful meadows have withered

    No more flowers or fragrance

  100. وانطوت فرحة الربيع ومات الـ

    ـعشب في أرضها وجفّ الماء

    And spring's joy has folded and died

    The grass in its land and the water dried

  101. لم تعد في العشاش قمريّة تشـ

    ـدو وتسقي أفراخها في النهار

    No dove remains in the nests

    Singing and feeding its chicks in daylight

  102. كيف تحيا الطيور في لهب الشمـ

    ـس وتلهو تحت اللظى والنار

    How can birds live in the scorching sun

    Playing under the burning blaze?

  103. لم يعد للنسيم قلب يحبّ النـ

    ـهر والمرج في ظلام الأماسي

    The breeze no longer loves the river

    And meadow in the darkness of night

  104. لم يعد للأزهار لون جميل

    يتجلّى لمرهفي الإحساس

    Flowers no longer have beautiful colors

    Revealed to the sensitive

  105. كلّ شيء في الصيف ينطق بالقسـ

    ـوة والشمس شعلة ولهيب

    Everything in summer speaks of cruelty

    And the sun is aflame and blaze

  106. تتشكّى عريشة الكرم لكن

    ليس يجدي توسّل ونحيب

    The vine arbor complains but

    Supplication and wailing are futile

  107. آه ما أكأب الظهيرة في الصيـ

    ـف إذا لاذ جوّها بالسكون

    Oh how gloomy is noon in summer

    When its air turns to stillness

  108. وتلاشى في الجوّ كلّ هتاف

    غير صوت الطاحونة المحزون

    And every shout fades from the air

    Except the mournful creak of the waterwheel

  109. وبكاء الحمامة الخافت النا

    ئي وصوت الغراب بين الكروم

    And the subdued crying of doves

    And crows' cawing amongst the vineyards

  110. وأزيز من نحلة تملأ القلـ

    ـب ملالا بصوتها المسؤوم

    And the drone of bees filling

    The heart with boredom in mournful tones

  111. ثم ماذا ؟ ماذا ترى العين في الصيـ

    ـف إذا اقبل المساء الداجي؟

    Then what? What does the eye see in summer

    When gloomy evening approaches?

  112. هل سوى منظر النخيل البعيدا

    ت وحزن الأشجار خلف السياج

    What but the sight of distant palms

    And the trees' sorrow behind the fence?

  113. هل سوى منظر الرعاة يعودو

    ن باغنامهم حيارى بطاء

    What but the sight of shepherds returning

    With their sheep, confused and slow

  114. بعد يوم أمضوه تحت لظى الشمـ

    ـس ملالا وشقوة وعناء

    After a day spent under the blaze of sun

    Wearied, suffering, and weary

  115. هل سوى الصائدين في النهر الضحـ

    ـل يعودون في المساء الكئيب

    What but the fishermen on the shallow river

    Returning gloomy in the mournful evening

  116. لم يصيدوا وصاد أرواحهم حرّ

    نهار مؤذ وعيش جديب

    Having caught nothing, while the heat of day

    Tormented and wearied their souls?

  117. كلّ يوم يمضي النهار ولا صيـ

    ـد يعزّي صيّاده الطوّافا

    Each day passes without any catch

    To console the wandering fisherman

  118. يا لقلب المسكين قد سئم النهـ

    ـر وعاف المياه والمجذافا

    Oh heart of the poor man, weary of the river,

    Its waters and oars

  119. فهو عند الغروب يرجع بالزو

    رق سأمان واجم الألحان

    At sunset he returns with the raft

    Bored, suppressing tunes

  120. إن تغنى فبالشكاة يزجّيـ

    ـها إلى خافق الحياة الجاني

    If he sings it is with complaints

    Addressed to the pulse of tormenting life

  121. كم رأيت الصيّاد في الشارع المقـ

    ـفر يمشي معذّبا مصدوما

    How often I've seen the fisherman on the barren street

    Walking tortured and stunned

  122. عكست مقلتاه أحزان قلب

    سئم العيش والوجود الأليما

    His eyelids reflecting the sorrows of a heart

    Weary of life and miserable existence

  123. لست أنت المحزون وحدك يا صيّـ

    ـاد في حومة الشقاء المخيف

    You're not the only one grieved, o fisherman,

    In the horror of frightening misery

  124. هو سجن الحياة قد كبّلت أقـ

    ـياده السود كلّ قلب رهيف

    It's the prison of life, its black chains

    Encircling every sensitive heart

  125. ذاك شأن الإنسان يا اّيها الصيّـ

    ـاد يا شاكيا ظلام الرزايا

    Such is man's way, o fisherman, o you complaining of the darkness of misery

    In endless struggle with the elements

  126. في صراع مع العناصر لا يهـ

    ـدأ حتى يأوي لوادي المنايا

    His dreams defied by bitter reality

    And his time hardened and ungiving

  127. في سبيل الحياة يبدل أفرا

    ح صباه ويستطيب أساه

    And in the path of life he sacrifices

    The joys of his youth and makes peace with his sorrow

  128. فهو يجري وراء حلم كذوب

    رسمته أوهامه ورؤاه

    For he runs after an imaginary dream

    Woven by his delusions and visions

  129. وعجيب أنّا نذوق سواد الـ

    ـعيش واليأس والملال لنحيا

    And strangely we taste the bitterness

    Of life, despair and boredom just to live

  130. أيّ عمر هذا ؟ وأيّة مأسا

    ة بلونا سوادها الأبدّيا ؟

    What life is this? And what tragedy

    Is it that we color with its eternal gloom?

  131. أبدا نحن في كفاح مع الأقـ

    ـدار والحادثات تبلي وتفني

    We are forever in struggle with fate

    And time wears us down and destroys us

  132. يتحدّى أحلامنا الواقع المرّ

    ويقسو زماننا المتجنّي

    Our dreams challenged by harsh truths

    While pitiless time plots against us

  133. ونخاف الغد الدجيّ ولا نعـ

    ـلم ماذا يكون فيه المصير

    And we fear the ominous tomorrow, not knowing

    What our fate in it will be

  134. يا ظلام المجهول ما أرهب التفـ

    ـكير لا كان سرّك المستور

    O darkness of the unknown, how fearsome it is to ponder

    Your concealed secret

  135. آه لو كان في الحياة مفرّ

    من شقاء الأوهام والأفكار

    Oh, if only in life there were escape

    From the misery of fantasies and thoughts

  136. في شعاب الهدوء يا ليتنا نلـ

    ـقي بأعباء خوفنا الجبّار

    In the valleys of tranquility, would that

    We could shed the burden of our overwhelming fears
