    And these breasts and these eyes,

  11. حرام عليك تذيبي سناها

    ببث الشكاة وذرف الشؤون

    It is forbidden for you to melt its radiance

    By venting complaints and shedding tears,

  12. رويدك صنو الشعور الرقيق

    الوفي العطوف على البائسين

    Gently, O guardian of delicate feeling,

    Loyally kind to the wretched,

  13. وخلي الملام فان المصاب

    يفيض الشؤون ويذكي الشجون

    And stop blaming, for suffering

    Makes tears overflow and stirs passions,

  14. ألست تراني عراني الذبول

    وهدّ السقام كياني الحصين

    Do you not see me, stripped of vigor,

    And sickness has wasted my sturdy being?

  15. ألست تراني فوق السرير

    ركاماً تباهت إليه المنون

    Do you not see me atop the bed

    A ruin toyed with by death?

  16. وهذا امامك جسمي المريض

    تداعى واخنت عليه السنون

    And here before you is my sick body

    Collapsing and worn by years,

  17. وهذي بثور الشباب السخي

    بسفك دمائي للسافكين

    And here are the boils of generous youth

    Shedding my blood for those who spill it,

  18. حياة البغي عذاب مقيم

    وشجو عظيم وحقد دفين

    A courtesan’s life is lasting torment,

    Great passion and buried malice,

  19. وقتل الليالي ببذل مياه ال

    محيا الوسيم ودمع سخين

    And killing nights by shedding priceless tears

    To bring to life the handsome one and hot tears,

  20. وهذي حياتي فخل الملام

    وكن لي نعم الوفي الامين

    And this is my life, so stop blaming

    And be my loyal, trustworthy friend,

  21. بديعة آه أبنتِ الخفي

    فزدهت الهموم وزدت الشجون

    Wondrous one, O daughter of mystery,

    Sorrows have increased and passions multiplied,

  22. بديعة جئت لانسى حياتي

    حياة الشؤون التي تذرفين

    Wondrous one, I came to forget my life,

    The life of sorrows that you shed tears over,

  23. فزاد شعوري هنا بالحياة

    فخابت اماني وخابت ظنون

    So here my feelings toward life increased,

    Hopes were dashed and conjectures foiled,

  24. بديعة كوني كما اشتهيك

    فتاة الخيال فتاة الفنون

    Wondrous one, be as I desired you,

    The girl of fantasy, the girl of arts,

  25. وأبقي وقيت الحديث الصحيح

    حديث السقام كسر دفين

    And keep the time for true talk,

    Talk of sickness that breaks the buried,

  26. وقولي بانك رمز الجمال

    ورمز الكمال ورمز الفتون

    And say that you are the symbol of beauty,

    And the symbol of perfection and the symbol of deadly charms,

  27. ولا تذكري لي بثور الشباب

    الشباب المريض الشباب المهين

    And do not mention to me the boils of youth,

    Sick youth, disgraced youth,

  28. بديعة انت التي هام فيك

    كبار الانام وهام البنون

    Wondrous one, you at whom the great ones raved,

    And the youths craved,

  29. أأنت السقيمة بنت السقام

    نحث إليك الخطى مهطعين

    Are you the sickly daughter of the sick

    At whom we hurry haltingly?

  30. واحسرتاه جنون الشباب

    وواحيرتاه شباب الجنون

    And alas for the madness of youth,

    And woe for the youth of madness!
