  1. و قد تنسى الشماتة من عدو

    و لا تنسى إذا شمتَ الصديقُ

    You may forget the gloating of an enemy,

    But do not forget when a friend gloats over you.

  2. توقُّعُ تلك كان و ليس هذي

    فهذي في الصداقة لا تليقُ

    Expecting that was possible, but this

    Does not befit friendship.

  3. فكم من واحد قد قلتَ عنه

    أخي أنْ منه أبهركَ البريقُ

    How many a one you said of him,

    "My brother, his integrity dazzles you,"

  4. إلى أن قالت الأيام عنه

    و ملء مقالها الخبر الدقيقُ

    Until the days said about him,

    And their full speech was the precise news:

  5. "صديقك ذاك ذئب ذو قناع

    له في مكره نسبٌ عريقُ"

    "That friend of yours is a wolf in disguise

    In his cunning he has a long lineage."

  6. و من عنت الظروف على كريمٍ

    تحمله لشخص لا يطيق

    And whoever dire straits befall a generous man,

    You endure for someone who cannot endure.

  7. و يخطئه المديح إلى لئيمٍ

    و من بالذم في الدنيا خليقُ

    And praise misses the mark for a villain,

    And the one fitting to blame in the world is rare.

  8. و تأتيه الشماتة من صديق

    إليه يقود ناقتَها العقوقُ

    And gloating comes to you from a friend -

    To him ingratitude leads his she-camel.
