ما كل ذي لحية طالت له ورع

أو كل من زار بيت الله معتمرُ

Not everyone with a long beard is wise

Nor everyone who visits God's house on pilgrimage

أو كل من فوقه نامت عمامته

شيخ جليل به الإيمان يفتخرُ

Nor everyone above whose turban sleeps

An eminent man filled with faith to be proud of

أو كل من ساق للمرعى بهائمه

عنها عصاه مضت للذئب تزدجر

Nor everyone who herds his cattle to pasture

His staff passing the wolf it wards off

أو كل من قال قولا شابه عسل

دوما عن السوء فاهُ كان يعتذرُ

Nor everyone whose words resemble honey

Whose mouth always makes excuses for evil

مظاهر الناس تبدو قلما صدقت

فرب أرقمَ تحت الثوب يستترُ

Rarely do people's appearances prove true

Many a depraved man hides beneath his robe
