  1. Sing a mawwal to sorrow when it comes.

    And cast sayings and talk to the scattering winds.

  2. And sip poetry from cups filled

    by Mustafa Ma'roufi with permissible wine.

    A young man's good deed leaves a sweeter impression

  4. among people when joined with gracious speech.

    Make your words a help to your deeds;

    in doing good, you will find the happiest state.

    ***

  6. I have sworn never to ride a vessel

    that means to carry me toward humiliation.

  7. A free person lives with his head held high

    and does not complain to people of an ailment.
