طائر من ظمأ قد جهدا
كدخان نفسا قد صعدا
A bird, weakened by thirst
Like smoke, its breath rose
قد رأى ألماسة مثل الندى
صاغها ماء لعينيه الصدى
It saw a diamond like dew
Molded by water for its echoing eyes
خدعته شذرة مثل الشرر
فرأى الجاهل ماء في الصخر
Deceived by a spark like embers
The ignorant saw water in the rock
لم يجد ريا بضرب المنقر
لم يصب ماء بنقر الجوهر
Finding no water despite striking with its beak
No water poured when tapping the gem
ذات الشذرة جنبت الهدى
تضرب المنقار في جسمي سدى
The spark itself avoided guidance
Striking my body with its beak in vain
لست ماء لا تراني ساقيه
ما أنا من أجل غيري باقيه
I'm not water, don't see me as its pourer
I'm not remaining for anyone but myself
جاهل يقصد هضمي ما اهتدى
لحياة نورها منها بدا
An ignorant one seeks to destroy me, not guided
To a life whose light began from it
كل منقار بمائي ينكسر
وترى الإنسان منه ينبهر
Every beak breaks against my water
And you see the human dazzled by it
ما رأى الطائر فيها أربا
فتولى عن سناها لغبا
The bird saw no profit in it
So it turned away from its brilliance ignorantly
حسرة في صدره تتقد
زفرات لحنه يصعد
Regret burns in its chest
Its song's tune rises in sighs
وأضاءت مثل دمع البلبل
قطرة في غصن ورد خضل
And it shone like the nightingale's tear
A drop on a blossoming rose branch
لضياء الشمس فيها منة
ولخوف الشمس فيها رعدة
It has the sun's radiance as a blessing
And the sun's fear in it as thunder
كوكب يرعد من نسل السماء
شاقه الجلوة في هذا الفضاء
A planet thundering from the lineage of the sky
Dazzled by its beauty in this space
غره الأكمام والزهر الخصيب
لم يزود من حياة بنصيب
Deceived by sleeves and fertile flowers
Not given a share of life
قطرة من دمع صب تبهر
زانت الهدب وكادت تقطر
A tear drop pours bedazzling
Adorning the cheeks, almost dripping
فمضى الطائر فيها راغبا
بل بالقطرة حلقا لاهبا
The bird passed by desiring it
Nay, hovering passionately around the drop
أيها الباغي عدوا تقهر
قطرة أنت ترى أم جوهر
O you transgressor, subduing enemy
Are you a drop I see or a gem?
حينما الطائر أضناه صداه
حي نفسا بحياة من سواه
When the echo weakened the bird
It came alive with the life of another
كانت الشذرة عضبا يرهب
لم يكن قطرة طل يشرب
The spark was anger that horrifies
It was no dewdrop to drink
قوة الذات احفظنها أبدا
وكن الألماس لا قطر الندى
Always preserve the strength of the self
And be the diamond not a drop of dew
أنضح القطرة كالطود ترى
حاملا غيما مفيضا أنهرا
You see the drop spill like a torrent
Bearing pouring rainclouds and rivers
أثبت الذات وفيها حقق
فضة كن بالتئام الزئبق
Affirm the self and within it, realize
Be like silver in the flowing of mercury
