We have heard that, in an age long past,
a flock of sheep dwelt in a pasture.
They multiplied in that fertile grazing ground,
carefree of lion and wolf.
Then fate swept away their hopes,
and Time shot its arrow among them.
Lions descended on them from their thickets,
spreading terror throughout their days.
The sign of strength is conquering rule;
its manifest secret is victorious conquest.
The lion beat the drums of sovereignty,
seizing every horizon of that flock,
and dyeing the pasture red.
Nothing but flight avails before the lion of the wild.
Then an aged, clever ram stepped forth,
seasoned by events both sweet and bitter.
He grieved at what his flock endured;
his heart bled at the lions’ deeds.
His course was most astute in its design,
though he lamented Time and its decree.
By cunning of mind he would protect himself,
for no soft creature could hope to match such might.
The power of strategy in warding off harm,
in an age of weakness, is stronger and more bitter.
When the madness of revenge erupts,
the slave’s mind becomes a creator of deceptions.
He said: “Here is a matter that bewilders the wise—
a boundless sea without a shore.
How can sheep contend with a lion:
a limp forearm against a hand of steel?
No sermon, however eloquent, can
turn a ram into a ravening wolf.
But the lion will see him as a lamb
if he forgets himself or grows heedless.”
So among the flock he laid claim to inspiration,
a messenger to the lions, those drinkers of blood.
He said: “All the people are insolent liars,
heedless of a day of unbroken doom.
I have brought the people an inviolable law;
I am light to a darkened eye.
Hasten to repent of every foul deed,
and leave loss behind for profitable action.
Woe to the body whose powers have been made firm!
Negation of the self is the strengthening of life.
On grass and fodder the spirit thrives;
whoever shuns meat draws near to God.
Sharpness of teeth is an abiding shame;
through it the sight of understanding grows dim.
Strength is nothing but manifest loss;
Paradise is reserved for the weak.
The pursuit of sovereignty is a spreading evil;
poverty is better than a prince’s glory.
A single grain is safe from scorching lightning,
while you see the threshing floor consumed by it.
Be a grain, not a broad and towering mound,
that you may receive light from the morning sun.
Tell whoever boasts of slaughtering sheep:
‘Slaughter the self in truth, and you shall gain.’
What bars the pathways of this life
is strength within it, sovereignty, and rank.
Grass is trodden down, yet rises upward;
it opens its eyes after death.
Forget yourself, if you would understand;
mad indeed is he who does not forget himself.
Close fast your eyes, your ears, and your mouth,
so thought may traverse the reaches of heaven.
This world is perishing upon perishing;
it is an illusion, with no hope within it.”
Struggle had once been the lions’ creed;
now they yearned for a life of ease.
Yielding to desire, they heeded the sleep-inducing counsel,
and thus the ram overwhelmed them with mighty sorcery.
Devouring sheep had formerly been their way;
then they followed the sheep in their law.
The very essence of lions turned to clay
when this fodder became their food.
Grass stripped the sharpness from their fangs
and quenched the eyes that once shot sparks.
That heart withdrew from the breast;
the substance of the mirror rusted.
Within the heart, the longing for action withered,
as did the passion to pursue hope.
Boldness vanished, and mighty resolve,
with radiance, honor, and deep-rooted glory.
The claw of steel grew feeble,
and the heart submitted in the body’s grave.
Fear grew, diminishing their strength;
fear severed aspiration at its roots.
Every malady lies in the collapse of high endeavor,
which makes the living resemble carrion.
The lions slept beneath the sheep’s enchantment,
and impotence called itself ‘the ascent of nations.’
