عدة الموت قنوط محبط

والحياة الحق أن لا تقنطوا

Death's tools are despair and dejection

And truly life, do not despair

إنما العيش رجاء يوصل

فقنوط الحي سم يقتل

Living is but hopeful arrival

So the despair of the alive is a killing poison

يأسك القبر إليه ترجع

إن تكن ألوند فهو المصرع

Your despair, to it you will return

If you become despondent, it is your end

ربت الخيبة في أكنافه

ونما العجز على ألطافه

It nurtured disappointment in its bosom

And weakness grew on its kindness

آه من نوم الحياة المخدر

إنه آية ضعف العنصر

Ah, the numbing sleep of life

It is a sign of the weakness of temperament

كحله في العين يعمى البصرا

ويرد الصبح ليلا أكدرا

Like kohl in the eye that blinds sight

And turns the dawn a gloomy night

نفس منه سموم للحياه

كل ينبوع به جف ثراه

A soul with its poisons for life

Every spring with it is a dried ruin

وهو للغم حليف واصل

إنما الغم لحي قاتل

And it is a loyal ally to sorrow

Sorrow is but a killer of the alive

يا سجين الغم أبصر واسمع

من رسول الله لا تحزن وعي

O prisoner of sorrow, see and listen

To Allah's Messenger: "Do not grieve"

ذلك النصح سرى في قلبه

فغدا الصديق صديقا به

That advice crept into his heart

So he became, by it, a loyal friend

إنما المسلم مثل الكوكب

باسم في سعيه والدأب

The Muslim is but like a planet

Constant in his endeavor and work

حرر النفس من الغم ودع

إن عرفت الله أغلال الطمع

Free your soul from sorrow and leave

If you know God, the shackles of greed

قوة الأيمان تحيي فاعلمن

ورد لا خوف عليهم فاقرأن

The strength of faith revives, so know

"No fear upon them" recite

قلبه من لا تخف قلب سليم

حين يمضي نحو فرعون كليم

Whose heart "Be not afraid" a heart secure

When he went to Pharaoh the chosen

خوف غير الله قتل العمل

وهو للأحياء قطع السبل

Fear other than God killed deed

And it cut off roads for the living

وبه العزم يخاف الغيرا

وترى المقدام منه حذرا

With it determination fears others

And you see the daring fearful through it

من نما ذا البذر يوما في ثراه

حرمته مر تجليها الحياه

Whoever nurtured that seed one day in his ruin

Forbidden it the life that revealed it

فهو فل وهو شاد يعزف

بيد شلت وقلب يرجف

So he is a withered flower that sways

With a paralyzed hand and trembling heart

يسرق الرجل قوي تسيارها

يسلب الرأس قوى أفكارها

Fear steals the strength of the strong man

And robs the head of its thoughts' power

إن تجلى لعدو خوفكا

هان كالورد عليه قطفكا

If it appeared to a foe your fear

You'd be as easy to pluck as a rose

سيفه يزداد فتكا في اليد

عينه فيك حسام لا يدى

His sword becomes more deadly in hand

His eye upon you a piercing blade

غلنا الخوف وكم في بحرنا

من عباب مائج في دهرنا

Fear shackled us, and how much

Of raging seas in our time

إن أبى النغمة يوما مزهرك

فمن الخوف تندى وترك

If one day the melody refuses your bloom

It's from fear you wither and halt

فاعرك الأذن يثر فيه الغناء

ويهز اللحن آفاق السماء

So rouse your ear, song stirs in it

And the tune shakes the horizons of heaven

كل شر في فؤاد يضمر

أصله الخوف إذا ما تبصر

Every evil secretly held

Its root is fear, if you do look

من ديار الموت عين قدما

مثل ميم الموت قلب أظلما

Of the lands of death, a foot forward

Like the "M" of death, a heart darker

عينه تلبيس آثار الحياه

أذنه تدليس أخبار الحياه

Its eye disguising life's tracks

Its ear fabricating life's tales

يزهر الخب به والملق

ونفاق القلب منه يورق

Through it flowers deceit and smooth talk

And the hypocrisy of hearts grows from it

ثوبه للزور ستر والريب

حجره الفتنة فيه والحرب

Its clothes are veil and doubt for lies

Its breast strife and discord within

حرم الخوف طموح الهمة

فهو خدن لحليف الذلة

Fear denied the ambition of resolve

It is the hut of an ally of disgrace
