1. برهمي في بناريس علم

    غائص في فكر كون وعدم

    A Brahmin in the flames of knowledge

    Immersed in the thought of existence and nonexistence

  2. برجال الله يحفى فعله

    ومن الحكمة واف كفله

    With the righteous whose deeds are protected

    And who are fully endowed with wisdom

  3. عقله فوق الثريا قد علا

    ذهنه ماض يحل المشكلا

    His mind ascended above the celestial sphere

    His thoughts solve every problem of the past

  4. فكره العنقاء إما حلقا

    شعلة منها السماك احترقا

    His brilliant mind either takes flight

    Or from it the skies are set ablaze

  5. كأسه دهرا خلت من خمرة

    قد حماه الراح ساقي الحكمة

    For ages his cup contained no wine

    Protected by the wind, the cupbearer of wisdom

  6. في رياض العلم ألمي شبكا

    طائر المعنى به ما أدركا

    In the gardens of knowledge he spread his nets

    The bird of meaning - with it he could not keep pace

  7. فكره أدمى ولكن لم تزل

    عقد الأكوان فيه دون حل

    His thoughts were human but the planets

    Remained to him an unsolved mystery

  8. أعربت عن يأسه آهاته

    وحكت حيرته نظراته

    His sighs expressed his despair

    And his glances spoke of his confusion

  9. سار يوما نحو شيخ كامل

    رب صدر بفؤاد آهل

    One day he walked towards a perfect Sheikh

    A breast containing a suffering heart

  10. لقي الشيخ بنفس راجيه

    تحسن الصمت وأذن واعيه

    He met the Sheikh with a hopeful soul

    Who listened in silence, attentively

  11. فأهاب الشيخ يا خذن السما

    اهبطن الأرض وارع الذمما

    The Sheikh exhorted: take to the heavens

    Descend to earth and pasture the flocks

  12. ضقت في الأرض مجالا فعلا

    فكرك المقدام في أوج العلى

    You felt cramped doing good deeds on earth

    So your ambitious mind rose to the heights

  13. طاوى الأفلاك في الأرض قم

    لا تطير تطلب سر الأنجم

    You rounded up the planets on earth - stop!

    Do not fly in search of the planets' secret

  14. لا أقول اهجر غدا أصنامكا

    كافر أنت فخذ زناركا

    I do not say forsake your idols tomorrow

    You are an unbeliever - so take your waistband

  15. يا أمينا لتراث الأولين

    لا تدع نهج الجدود الأقدمين

    O trustee of the legacy of ancient times

    Do not abandon the path of your ancestors

  16. باجتماع الشمل تحيا الأمة

    وكذاك الكفر فيه وحدة

    Through unity the nation comes alive

    And so it is with unbelief - it has unity

  17. لم يكمل فيك حتى كفر كا

    ليس أهلا لفؤاد صدر كا

    You have not yet perfected your unbelief

    You are not worthy of such an understanding heart

  18. إن إبراهيم فينا هجرا

    وبعدتم أنتم عن آزرا

    Abraham left us long ago

    While you moved away from Azar

  19. قيسنا ما هام خلف المحمل

    في جنون العشق لما يكمل

    We measure what Qais craved in madness

    Of love, for what is incomplete

  20. إن شمع الذات فينا لانطفاء

    كيف يجدينا طواف في السماء

    The candle of the self in us is extinguished

    How can circumambulating the heavens avail us?

  21. جاش نهر الجنج يوما جائلا

    في سفوح من همالا قائلا

    The waves of the sea foamed up in fury

    Down the slopes of impenetrable mountains saying:

  22. حاملا من برد أوقاره

    عاقدا من أبهر زناره

    Bearing in its dignity its coolness

    Tying round its waist its glittering belt

  23. صاغك الحق نجيا للسماء

    وحمى رجلك سيرا في العراء

    God created you as a savior for the heavens

    And protected your feet as you walked the barren land

  24. قيدك رجلك عن سير فما

    هيبة فيك ورأس قد سما

    He restricted your feet from walking

    O venerable one, whose head reached the sky!

  25. إنما العيش مسير وصلا

    وحياة الموج في أن يجفلا

    Life is but a journey and prayer

    And the wave's life is but to roll on

  26. غضب الطود لقول النهر

    فرمت أنفاسه بالشرر

    The mountain was angry at the river's talk

    And its breaths blew with sparks

  27. قال يا مرآة وجهي ويلكا

    كم حوى صدري بخارا مثلكا

    It said: O my mirror image - woe to you!

    How my breast contained vapors like you!

  28. إن هذا السير فيه الحين لك

    من يزل عن نفسه يوما هلك

    This journey now is yours

    Whoever leaves himself one day is lost

  29. بمقام لك هلا تأبه

    أفخار بالردى يا أبله

    With a place to stay - why not settle?

    Boasting of evil, O ignorant one!

  30. يا وليد الفلك المرضع

    صرت دون الساحل المتضع

    O child of the celestial sphere nourished!

    You became less than the lowly coast

  31. قد وهبت النفس بحرا غاصبا

    قد أبحت الروح لصا سالبا

    You usurped the self wrongfully

    You made the soul a thieving vagrant

  32. كن كورد في رباه عاكف

    لا ترم للريح كف القاطف

    Be like a sapling focused on its Lord

    Do not cast your palms to the blowing wind

  33. إنما العيش نماء في المكان

    وبروض الذات قطف الأقحوان

    Life is but growth in a place

    And plucking flowers in the self's meadows

  34. في دهور لم تزحزح أرجلي

    أتراني زائلا عن منزلي

    In times when my feet did not waver

    Do you see me leaving my abode?

  35. وإلى الأفلاك قدى يصعد

    فعلى سفحي الثريا ترقد

    And though my steps ascend the sky

    On my slopes the celestial sphere rests

  36. أنت تفنى في خضم خضرم

    وقلالى مسجد للأنجم

    You perish in the midst of green pastures

    While my summits are a temple for the stars

  37. وبعيني لاح سر الفلك

    وبسمعي طيران الملك

    With my eyes the secret of the celestial sphere shone

    And with my hearing the flight of angels

  38. وبنار الجد طول الدهر

    قد حوى صدري صنوف الجوهر

    And with the fire of my zeal through time

    My breast contained every kind of gem

  39. صخر قلبي وناري في الصخر

    ليس للماء إلى ناري ممر

    My heart is of rock and my fire is in the rock

    No passage for water to my fire

  40. قطرة إن كنت فاحفظ نفسكا

    جاهد الأمواج واجنب يأسكا

    If you are but a drop, guard yourself

    Resist the waves and abandon despair

  41. وابتغ النور وكن درا يضئ

    ثم كن قرطا على وجه وضئ

    Seek the light and be a shining pearl

    Then be an earring on a glowing cheek

  42. أو فزد واعل سحابا ممطرا

    يشعل البرق ويهمى أبحرا

    Rise up as a rain-bearing cloud

    That lights up lightning and rouses seas

  43. يبسط البحر لجدواك يدا

    شاكيا من فاقة يرجو الندى

    The sea stretches its hand to your stream

    Complaining of poverty, seeking moisture
